Clutch and Fly Wheel Problems

My husband and I have a 2003 Hyundai Tiburon. The clutch and fly wheel went out at 27000 miles. They said it is not under warranty. Well, that will not work for me! Right now we are seeing what the consumer affairs department will do for us 1-800-633-5151. First they said they will not do anything. Then I got more upset, and they called the dealers Service Manager to call the Manufactor (Only the Dealer can do this) to see what they will cover if anything. If they do nothing, then I will do what I have done with other companies. Call the CEO! Yes, you have the right to do this. Just look up the Annual Report and on the back pages it should list the corporate office and the CEO's name. Call the corporate office, ask to speak with the CEO by name. By the way, the CEO of Hyundia Motor America is: Robert Cosmai. The address: 10550 Calbert Ave., Fountain Valley, CA 92708 Phone Number: 714-965-3000 If they won't work with us, then I will call the Hyundai Corporate Office in Korea. For now, I am sure that Hyundai America will do just fine. Anyway, Start calling Robert Cosmai and maybe if he gets enough calls himself (or his secretary) something will be done. Start dialing and smiling! - This does work! I got results with BrightHouse, StateFarm, Verizon and many other companies by just skipping the Management and going to the CEO. Hopefully you will not settle and pay for faulty parts. It is not your driving! My husband and I have had several Standard Vehicals. Our 1995 Nissan we had 95000 miles on it when we traded it for the Tiburon and the clutch was fine. My 2001 Ford I have 37000 mile on it and the clutch is fine. It is not our driving! It is the Tiburon! Don't settle! You can bet we will not!!!

thanks for the tip and name & telelphone number shan. I wished you could've came here sooner for advice - a guy named nisco really knows a lot about these Tibs in this forum and I've saw several threads in which he's posted the 2003 Tib clutch & flywheel is nothing but junk. I have a '00 Tib and I bought it off of a used car lot. Supposedly nothing was wrong with my Tib then few months later...it went to crap. I wish I would've known this sooner!

Curbie, I have actually stopped calling that number. All you get is a person claiming to be the CEO's assistant. They will not put any messages through to the CEO or let you speak with his secretary. So here is the following information that my Attorney Generals office gave me. 1st register a complaint with you Attorney Generals Office. Once they get enough complaints, they will open an investigation and possibly file a suit against the company. 2nd file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission 1-877-382-4357 or go to their website www.ftc.gov and file a complaint. The FTC regulates all international companies. Once they get enough complaints on a certain company, product, service...they will investigate. 3rd file a complaint with Defects Investigations www.nhtsa.dot.gov and click on the defects investigations link. The Defects Investigation department gov agencies that gets most Recalls activated. The most important thing is to file a complaint with each department. This will make it easier for future consumers. So even if you have already fixed your problems...file your complaints. Plus, if anyone at a later date needs to file a lawsuit, their Attorney's even the Attorney Generals office will be able to use each complaint, with each agency in their suit as evidence.

yeah it says in your user's manual under the warranties section or anywhere else you look that the clutch, brakes, belts, hoses, and other crap that wears with driving is covered for up to 12k miles... and stop complaining... with my car they have replaced the enigne, head and transmission once, and rebuilt the lower end of the engine... and today when i finally got it out of the shop from the lower end being rebuilt i was driving and something was knocking and my damn car just died on the interstate ... oh and they also replaced my clutch (i have 17,500 miles)

Sorry for all of you problems. I am glad that they replaced all of those items for you. The reason I made this post, is because there have been many, many other Tibs from 2003 with the same problems and more. Plus, my husband Managed a Firestone for 6 yrs, Clutchs and Fly Wheels should last, and do last with other makers much longer. Even a sports car you should get at least 50 to 60 thousand miles on the clutch, and that is being very fair to the manufacture. The only way, we as consumers, can make these companies produce vehicals up to specs is to file complaints. We are lucky in that we have had no others problems with our Tib, but others were not as lucky. We still do expect that when we pay cash for a vehical, not to put any major money into it until at least after 3 to 4 years. This was not expected. That is why I am upset. Being that we have had five other standard vehical with no clutch problems going upwards to 95000 miles...this does clearly show that the Tibs have a problem. I am happy to say, that Hyundai changed the clutch, since then (showing they knew there is a problem) but I am not sure if the upgrade is any better. We will have to see. Also, others have had this clutch assembly replaced after the warranty, yet others have not. It is up to us consumers to let others know, they have a voice and to use it. It will only make the next Tiburon series even better. Don't get me wrong, we love our Tibby, but we do expect it to stand up to all standards.

there is a real shitty clutch on there yes it sucks. they've changed their clutches so the problem has been taken care of your warrenty is up some people get it paid for some people dont you shold be happy you found a place that was willing to pay 1/2 cause they dont have to and you are being real damn generous saying 50-60,000 miles it should last atleast 60,000 if you suck at driving a standard. i'm not sayin you shouldnt be pissed or anything but going through all this for something that they have changed seems a little rediculous to me. maybe i dont feel as strongly aobut as you because i'm planing on replaceing them anyways but still

I closed the other thread so we can reply in one and not have two threads going. This way its easier posting the replies in one.
I wonder if the dealership you refer to is Ferman of New Port Richey/Hyundai of New Port Richey. They had a few complaints last year with the BBB, but this year there are none. Have you tried taken the vehicle to other dealerships in the Clearwater area?
There is a tsb that states there are new clutch components available for certain 2003 Tibs produced up to April 1, 2003. The tsb is 04-40-005 (http://www.hmaservice.com/webtech/iindex.asp?id=394895142#_394895142) You may want to print it up and take it to the dealership even though they should have it in their system already.
Now as for the warranty, according to the Warranty Coverage guide (the same ones that the dealerships goes by and which you can download off my website) it states...
In the Official Hyundai Warranty Coverage Guide (http://www.santafemods.com/Downloads/WarrantyCoverageGuide.zip)...
on page 13
Clutch, Manual transmission, adjust
is only covered for 1 year/12,000 miles for any vehicle produced from 1995-2004
on page 14
Clutch, manual transmission, cover and housing
is covered for 5 years/60,000 miles for vehicles produced 1995-2004 and
10 years/100,000 miles (if original owner)
also on page 14
Clutch, manual transmission, Disc and Throw-out bearings
5 years/60,000 miles for vehicles produced from 1995-2004
10 years/100,000 miles (if original owner)
on page 20
Fly Wheel
5 years/60,000 miles for vehicles produced from 1995-2004 and
10 years/100,000 miles (original owner)
Now in the Warranty Policy and Procedures Guide, it states...
on page 53-54 what is not covered and it does state normal maintenance items such as clutch linings, specifically worn clutch linings.
Now your post does not specify if the linings are worn. If they are, I can see why they would say no to fixing it under warranty, but the fly wheel I do not see why they can fix that under warranty.
Now mind you I am no service tech guy, maybe one of our regualr tech guys in here can answer you more specific as well as you giving them a bit more diagnostic information. I am sure they will be here shortly giving their views on the matter.

Yeah, I do feel strongly:) I have been around long enough and over the years, I guess that I have just lost my willingness to let big companies get away with this kind of stuff. LOL I just feel that if you are going to make a product, you should do it right and if it isn't...then you should stand behind your product, fix it, and take care of your customers. Plus, I am upset, because my husband and I have been saving in order to purchase a Santa Fe this year. Now, I am going to have to start looking for another vehical. After this, we will no longer be purchasing anything from Hyundai or their subsidiaries. Does anyone know of a gook reliable SUV that is affordable? We only pay cash for vehicals.
ShannonE
03-11-2005, 09:25 AM
Yes it was the New Port Richey store you referred to. We took it to another dealer in St. Petersburg. The one we purchased the vehical from. Okay, they would not warranty the Fly Wheel, because the clutch wore down until the rivets of the clutch dug into the fly wheel. So, nothing was under warranty. The linings were worn. They said it was due to our driving. LOL we have only had five other Standards and no problems. Infact, I have a Ford Focus (not that great of a vehical) and the clutch is still fine after 40,000 miles. My husbands last vehical had 95000 miles with no problem. This is the same thing that I heard with the other post on the other Hyundai Forums. That they say it is the driving. BTW the fly wheel was Blue because of the heat. It just doesn't make since. They changed the clutch because this was happening too much, but it is our fault. Oh well, the only thing that I can do is try to get others to file complaints and hope that there will be enough to get Hyundai in trouble over this issue.

Yes, we had that TSB and we took it to the dealer. Both the dealer and HMA Corporate said that the TSB was just an advisory, not an actually Recall or Warranty. So the dealer did use the upgraded parts, but it was still at our cost.

Hi guys,
I have had so many emails from people on other Forums with the same issues on their Tibs. So what I have done is to go to the Montel Williams Show website and post my story to the editors. I have then emailed each person back, letting them know and asking if they will also submit their story to the show. I am thinking, that if the editors get enough of the same stories on Hyundai that they will run a show. I let them know exactly how this NON-American company is treating American Consumers. And yes, the name is Hyundai Motor AMERICA, but all of their stock is only traded on the Korean Exchange, and the main company is a Korean Co. HMA is just a subsidiary.

Yep, we took that to the dealer, they said it is just an advisory on what to do. Not an actual recall, so it is not covered. It is up to the District Parts Service Manager on what to do, and corporate stands by the DPSM. So if they say no, then it is no. If they say half, then half, and full coverage, then it is full coverage. Basically, it depends on if you get a nice DPSM or not. That is why they have covered the same issue with some people and not others. And corporate gets aways with it, because they say and I quote from T. A. CEO's assistant, "We completely support our DPSM's. They take pictures and notes on each vehical, and their decision is final." So we only got it taken care of at 50%, and that was because of the Factory Rep., not the DPSM or corporate. This is why I am pushing the issue. We were lucky, not as lucky as others. I feel for those who had to pay full price, just to have to pay again in another 15000 to 30000 miles. Plus, I have noticed many people saying to go with an "After Market" clutch. This is unbelievable! Usually, you want factory parts, unless you are modifying the vehical for alternative reasons. Well, I am just hoping that others agree with me and take action. :)

TS out We are going on our 4th clutch. What I do not understand is that (1 year ago) before the dealer said that they would not pay because the clutch was worn and that was the reason they were not going to cover the flywheel. Today, the hyundai rep said this time your clutch is not worn but the flywheel is and they are still not going to pay. The Hyundai rep also felt the need to take pictures of our vehicle. I'm sure it has something to do with the complaint made to consumer affairs.

To any who have had to replace a clutch/fly wheel on the Hyundai Tiburon, I"m compiling a list of people and cars to send to the FTC to get us all reimbursed for what we've spend on a mechanical defect. This problem is not a normal wear and tear, this now falls under the mechanical defect area, which they are legally required to fix (I have an awesome lawyer on this). Send me the make, model, year and how many miles you had on the car when the clutch and/or flywheel burned out (and how much it cost to replace if known). EMail it to me at [email protected] and I'll make sure you're one of the people reimbursed. I've already talked to a few people at Hyundai, and they're sweatin it. They really, really don't like me right now. Thanks.

I had the same problem... but it was 17,000 miles. At that point I had minor upgrades(coldair, catback, headers, shorty shifter, ect.) It took about 2 months of bitching and with my dads help we got it replaced all for free... My advice: Keep trying, once u see the invoice equaling $0.00 at the bottom, you will know its all worth it. Don't let them push you around. Im going to wait for this one to blow out again on me and then get an aftermarket clutch kit. The parts aren't alot...to buy, but the install is horrable to pay for. I wish you the best! good luck. At least now you know it can be done... And if you ever start a case or something against it, Ill join. :)
