could anybody tell me what a good program is for a beginner to 3D modelling?

i'd prefer a free download one. i think there was one called "blender" or something that you can download.

I suggest you try this free software.
http://www.anim8or.com/main/index.html
Its really easy to use and almost as good as any 3d program i've used minus the rendering and animation capabilites. Just read the manual and follow the tutorials. The forum also has great resources and you can see people use it to model cars.

thanks Ray, i downloaded it a few days ago, and it's a really good program to learn with.
it's easy to get a decent knowledge of 3D modelling.

so far i've made (in chronological order):

light globe
cat
spark plug
mushroom
igloo
electric guitar
tandoori oven (with a fish in it)

weird. it worked for me.
you can try http://www.blender3d.com but it is a more complex program. if you didn't get how to use anim8or, you might find this even more difficult. I suggest trying to progress slowly to get the concept of 3D and the method to create actual models.
