91 Explorer stalls when I step on accellerator

My 91 Explorer idles fine, but once it warms up (after about 10-20 minutes of driving) it will stall out at stop signs, or red lights when I try to accellerate. It idles fine, and if I don't press the gas it will move, really slowly, but it won't stall, but as soon as I step on the gas it stalls. When I try to start it back up it will start, but sometimes it won't start back up till I put the gas right to the floor. Also, sometimes if I baby it for 4 or 5 minutes while I drive it then it stops doing this, but then sometimes it starts doing it again without any notice. Any suggestions what is causing this?

It sounds like the IACV ( i.e. Idle Air Control Valve ). It can be serviced with a simple cleaning. This problem is common on all older vehicles. Do a GOOGLE search for instructions on how to do it.

The 91's air control valve is easy to service. Just cleaned the one on my son's 91 to correct a weird running conditon. Just unhook the battery, unhook the plug connecting to it, loosen the two bolts that hold it on (#10;s I think)and be careful to not destroy the gasket when removing(ours stayed on the intake). Then remove the screws holding the solenoid on and remove that. Spray out the mechanical part with a good carb cleaner and blow dry. Assemble and install. Let engine run for a while to relearn idle. Ours was dirty but also had a piece of grass in it that it somehow sucked in. Never seen anything like it. Runs like a top. Hopefully this is your problem.
