Hi, I have about 30,000 miles on my corolla and I wanted to do a bit of maintenance myself instead of going to the dealer...

Anyway, I am trying to change the spark plugs, and I cannot found them! Usually they are located on the top of the engine, but on the Corolla 2004 model there is a large black box that recover the engine and I don't see them.

Anybody already changed the spark plugs on the new corolla model? Where are they?

Thanks a lot for your help!
Julien

you ever look under that "large black box"...maybe they could be under there.

take off the eng cover.. the 1zz (with VVTI) has the igniton coil over the sparkplugs.. unbolt the rale and the ignition coil .. and the spark plugs are right under there.

Just remember to use anti-seize when putting new plugs in place.. you don't want the spark plugs completely seized in the cyl head .. btw.. 30000 KM? I change mine around 60000 .. but the dealer suggests 192000. :S

If you had trouble finding the plugs may be you sould have the dealer change them. Put if you go ahead with your project the torque setting for each plug is 13 ft/lbs. As mentioned before, use anti-seize

These Corollas are made so that you don't have to change the plugs for 192,000 km. Why change them??

I changed my plugs at 60000 because I found my plugs to be pretty nasty.. dealer suggest 192000 .. but I disbelieve it's a wise choice esp if you are driving in city..

TAKE THE plastic black cover off, there will be 4 black squares spaced out with a nut on each one , just unscrew that nut make sure to unclip the wire adapter plug before snaps right off, these long things that are dark grey which touch the plugs the spark plugs are at the bottom..yeah had a bit trouble myself...new cars who'd figure

This thread is old enough to have had the plugs changed twice since then. Please pay attention to the relevancy of your posts.

I am telling you the exact procedure to find and if you want then you can also change
spark plugs. just follow the procedure below-
Step 1: The Corolla has a protective plastic cover over the top of the engine. It's held in place by two 10mm nuts. Undo these and set them aside in a tin to save them.. Set the cover aside.
Step 2: This model is has a specific ignition coil for each spark plug and they are directly connected to the spark plug. The coil is held down by a 10mm bolt.
Step 3: Remove the bolt with the socket wrench / spanner.
Step 4: The Corolla also has a plastic snap fitting that connects the coil to the ignition harness. Carfully press down on the release tab (on the driver's side of the connector) and wiggle the plug to release it. These plastic connectors become progressively more fragile with time, so always be careful.
Step 5: Use the spark plug socket, extension and rachet to loosen the plug. Then spin it loose by hand. It should only have tension on the first turn and then be easy to spin.
Step 6: Always check your spark plugs. The condition of the plug is indicative of the overall health of the motor. This plug is in relatively good condition, but shows significant wear. We opted (since we've already bought them) to replace the plugs.
And now you are done with changing the spark plugs.
