A question

Well this doesn't really have to do with street racing, but you guys are smarter than most, so hear it goes. As you know, I've ordered a transmission cooler for my maxima...I went on Maxima.org and looked at a "how-to" for the installation...what this guy did was incorporated the STOCK tranny cooler by routing the return line from the stock one, then feeding it to the aftermarket one, then using YET ANOTHER return line from the aftermarket one to feed back to the transmission pan...I was like WTF, I thought the whole idea of getting a transmission cooler was to elimate the use of the OEM one completely...oh wait, this does have to do with street racing because I PURCHASED this product with saving my transmission when I street race in mind...but anyways, can anyone shed any light on this subject?

I would just use the aftermarket one. Probably easier to install too.

That's what I was thinking...If I used the other guy's method, incorporating the OEM cooler with the aftermarket one, I'd have to buy extra lengths of hose and crap like that...I'm hoping that he was just making it more complicated than it actually is and that I won't fuck up my transmission if I just bypass the OEM cooler completely.

its better to use both transmission coolers. The factory one works, just not well enough, why wouldn't you add instead of subtracting and THEN adding? Also, you don't need any more hose, think about it.

I have a novel idea...did it come with instructions? If so...READ THEM!

It'll come tomorrow...and the guy said the factory hoses were useless because they were pre-bent and only conform to the OEM cooler...shit this is going to be a pain in the ass, isn't it?

use 'em both, the more the tranny fliud travles the cooler it gets. if you just use the aftermarket one it'll be like having the stock setup. the whole point is to add a second unit for the fluid to travel through. if you can, mount the new unit in front of your radiator for even better cooling. tranny fluid breaks down at 200 degrees, cooling it down'll keep your tranny running for longer.

Hey BP2k2MAX, you are an .org-er right? Read that mingo dude's write-up on the install of the tranny cooler, and explain to me in plain english what he is doing...because I got totally confused by his write-up.

after you get the new tranny cooler set up with hoses, you remove the two radiator mount bolts and mount it to the front of the A/C condensor, right behind the bumper. you take off the radiator bolts so you can move it back and get your hands between it and the condensor to tie the zip ties.

the stock tranny cooler is on the bottom of the radiator. you leave the line going into the stock tranny cooler alone. run a new line coming out of the oem tranny cooler to the input on the new one you bought. you then put another piece of hose on the return end of the tranny cooler, and run that hose back to the the front/top of the tranny. then just tuck the hoses and zip tie them down in a couple spots.

P.S.: It came today, unfortunately I won't get a chance to install it until monday at the earliest, as that is the next day where I will have 3 consecutive hours of free time.

mine took me less than 2 hours and I had to improvise a way to cut the hose (i used a pocket knife)
