You can get one at Chassis Engineering for ~400, (mild steel) and comes with a pre bent main hoop and padding.

you need a roll cage for a daily driver? Wow

yeah, but i'm looking at doing track later. but I do a lot of street stuff, and we have a drift track setup down here. so I just want to make sure i have safety too, but just because i want oem parts doesnt its a daily driver. I use it for multiple things.

"Wow" is right. Hat's off to this guy for doing a cage first. Safety First, but most poeple do it last. I've wanted to do a cage for many years, even before the track required it. The speeds we can so easily reach in a moderately modded DSM certainly warrant it, I know I would feel better. And lets not forget that it will do wonders for chassis rigidity, improving the handling and feel of the car. I never convinced myself to spend the 800 bucks though, but now these prefab kits that used to only be available for 1Gs are making it more affordable. Especially if you know someone (that you trust) who can weld. Perferably someone that does it for a living. 300 in parts, a hundred bucks or two to your buddy, and its done.

Well, I push my luck on the hwy a little to much, and I have a g/f to take care of too. that wont help if im sittin in the hospital or dead. Plus the hwy near my house has been under repair for 3 years and it wont be done til 2010. thank you for noticing that im safety first 95 GSXracer, i appreciate that.

I dont think i would really worry about a roll cage..a guy i know rolled this talon 13 times at about 220 km....the two of them walked away with no scratches...and the car seemed to hold up pretty dam good...

Just because those poeple survived doesnt mean everyone will. There is no arguing the fact that a roll cage, properly constructed, will increase the chances of survival by about eleventy billion times. Rally cars are a good example of what kind of accidents can be survived with a real good cage. They may only get up to what, 150 mph, but 150 through the woods is a little different than a tire wall. :D At any rate, I think that even though the cage is good because the track requires it, you can't get it too soon. And for this guy to realize that he could kill his GF too if things go wrong is commendable. How many posts do we see that start off "I was doing 180 in my NT with the GF in the car..." That really pisses me off.

Very well stated! Although previously i stated that you prob wouldnt need one.....yas are all right in sayin that they should be used alot more, and alot earlier in out modification list! And yes, most tracks do require a cage at a certain time....the specific time...im not sure but i think its somewheres around the low 11 range...

tracks here require it anything below 13 and yes its good he didi it right away. people that are going 180 without one are pretty stupid in my eyes anything with a turbo should have it.

thats really kool an all.....but i dont know if you know this but the part your heart is attached to....i forgot what it was called, been a while since my EMC classes.....but people have been found dead in cars that have nothing more than a little bit of damage to their front bumper from hitting a pole or a car.......and their heart dislodges from its rightful place fairly easy. u live thinking your ok for maby ...10 seconds.... then u prity much just die realy quick. ive been in alota accidents and harsh things have happened to me.......i give this guy EXTREAM props :bigthumb: for his motivation towards being safe not only for his good but his loved ones......everyone should take note of that too. its amzing the amount of damage a human body is capable of withstanding in rare ocations but in most cases its extreamy fragile....so keep that in mind while cranking all those horses outa your DSM. sorry just felt i had to let people know what ive learned.

Here is California, now NY. Kudos for your buddy running an 11.4. Would be surprised that Canada's laws are less restrictive than ours, but I'm not Canadian. I've heard some tracks require cages at 11.49 instead of 11.99 and lower.
Commonsense rules over law. If you're smart enough to tune for elevens, you're smart enough to see the danger of it. Put a cage in anyway.

That would be a drvieshaft loop. Generally not required on DSMs because we have two of them built in, as driveshaft carrier bearing brackets ;)
NHRA rules require a cage at 11.99 and faster. IHRA requires it at 11.49 and faster. Luckily my local track is IHRA or I would have needed a cage two years ago. Still should have done it though. In all cases, the limit for a convertible is much higher, I Want to say 13.99 for both IHRA and NHRA, but I cant be certain, never paid much attention. All tracks in the US will follow one of those two sets of rules, though some are less strict than others. Another track near me hardly does a tech inspection at all, while the main track I go to is religious about it. If your helmet is snell 85 instead of snell 90, you'll be watching from the stands ;) But a track that is strict on rules is a good thing. Less chance of the guy next to me blowing up and taking me out, or the guy running before me putting oil down on the track that goes unnoticed, etc.

I have a questions about this, seeing as I have never been to the track. I am going to be completing my mod list here in the next 2 months with a 16g, 550cc injectors and a 195lph fuel pump. I am going to SBR for the dyno tuning and would like to take it to the track. I am assuming, by what I have been reading, that I should be under the 13.99, so the questions is what will they do?? Will I get 1 run and then they give me the boot :nutkick: ? I can't see spending all of that money for a roll cage when I'm just looking for a quick street car.

Yeah, have a nice run. They won't let you do another until you meet their requirements. I've heard some tracks get mighty pissed when you run a time far past the requirement (Run a low ten without a cage).

Pretty shitty for sure, especially with front wheel drive where traction is key. You can track-hop-- get one good run in at each of the tracks in your area.
