gearbox/clutch troubles?

Hey all, please read this, im having trouble changing gears it, in 1st and 2nd mainly, if i let in the clutch and try to change down it wont go in striaght away it will kind knotch in, sometimes it wont go in at all and i have to let out the clutch and try again, other times it will go in first time and wont be knotchy at all.
Once it is usually in the gear i want though if i dont move the car and try to put it into the same gear its fine
Also having trouble changing from 1st to 2nd have to do it slowly or it will somes do i kind of grinding noise, its not bad but its like it just hit off something.
There is a creaking noise everytime i let in or out the clutch, its the clutch cable or something, could this be causing the trouble? i have noticed that when the car is cold it is harder to change and i have to let the clutch out further for it to engage and when its warmer it engages closer to the floor.
But the main problem of changing occurs mainly all the time
Any suggestions?

i would check your tranny fluid level first

How do i check that? its a manual, 91 civic dx 1.3, i havnt noticed any leaks or anything

If its a cable tranny, you may just have to adjust the tention on it. I had this prob, as the clutch wears you pedal gets shorter and eventually where you have trouble changing gears, and if thats not it check you tranny fluid, If you don't know where it is or how to do it go and get a haynes manual from autozone so you'll have something to look at

First of all you should NEVER downshift to first gear unless less than 5mph.
First thing I would do is check the fluid level, there are 2 plugs on the trans - passenger side. One is the drain and the other is a fill, it should be very obvious which is which. The fluid level should be to the bottom of the fill plug - 10w-30 engine oil.
Next I would lube the clutch pedal.
If the trans is still acting funny I would take it to some one who knows what they are doing. It's a lot cheaper to install a used or rebuilt trans than it is to rebuild your current trans.
Don't buy a haynes manual and don't buy anything from autozone, their parts suck. Buy a real manual from www.helminc.com or wait til later and I can post a link for a Honda manual.

Hey civickiller, do you have a link for the D16Z6 or A6 that is a littler better than a haynes? The only reason i go to autozone around here is b/c they are the only people that carry stuff for my car in west tennessee. I don't like their parts either but what can you do when ya gotta have something fast. Thanks man later.

CivcKiller, yea, you read it right, i have the binghamtonlife.com stuff, but i am more talking something that better explains wiring on motor swaps if there are any out there. Thanks man
