noisy valves

i have 98 honda civic ex lately my valves sound like shit after 3,000 rpms. I get my oil changed every 3,000 miles and have plenty of oil in right now and the valves are loud as fuck. Also another problem there is the sour egg smell coming from my cat converter, is it time to get a hi flow cat?

Your engine requires valve adjustments at least every 30,000 miles.

My advice on this one, take it to the dealer. This way if it's a bad cat. it might be covered under a warranty extension. Valve adjustment is 1.0hr of labor plus valve cover gasket and seals. Plus they will let you know of other problems or maintnance issues.

Don't skip a timing replacement!

ive had this car since 73,000 miles and now its almost at the 90,000 mark, so probably the valves never got adjusted, is it like that on all hondas in general or just vtech hondas cause they have adjustable valves?

All Honda/Acura 4cylinders require valve adjustments because they are a solid lift. 90,000 miles means your timing belt is due. That is far more important than a skipped valve adjustment. When your timing belt breaks the valves crash into the pistons and cause all types of damage.

If it were my car, 90K service and timing belt with water pump and belts would be changed.

i work at a dealership, so i can change all my fluids for free, just buy the water pump $50 and the timing belt $25.

damn, for $1000, id do all that and give you a full tank, car wash, and give it to you by the end of the day. that would make a pretty damn good living.

lets run that back buddy...i know ex d16y8 is NON INTERFERANCE...skip a tooth break a belt...no bent valves...u might be book smart....u do oil changes...i do everything else

well then smartass... y then, when building a motor, it is recommended after piston alterations, or camshaft upgrades, to check VALVE TO PISTON CLEARANCE!!!???? even if the only thing u do is add an adjustable cam gear. that's because it IS an interferance engine, and if there isn't enough clearance, then the valves will interfere w/ the travel of the pistons. if u'r so damn sure it is a non interferance motor, take urr timing belt off, rotate ur cam 60 degrees, put ur timing belt back on, crank her over for a solid 15 seconds (which is the manufacture's limit for continuous cranking), open the head, and proceed to soil urself. :loser:

you show me a y8 thats interferance...i delt with plenty y8 with broken timing belts and no bent valves...accords, integras yeah sure y not...but i knoe from experience y8 is non inter.

got the valves adjusted, but still hear loud knocking sound whenever i go past 1,500 rpms sounds like it could be coming from the bottom end. If this is serious enough anyone know any sites for bottom end overhaul kits?

Pray that your engine is still under warranty if not get prepared to buy a new block or just the bushings,, it really depends, how serious it is!!!

well its blown! Took it to my buddy's work to see what exactly the problem is and we took it around the block for a test drive and shifted into second gear and pow!!! blew a whole in the block.
