Oil Pressure Gauge

I have a 96 Dodge truck with the 5.9L engine. My oil pressure gauge moves from normal to low pressure most noticeably when the transmission shifts and there is the change in RPM. It will do that one day and then the next will not or not as noticable anyway. Could this just be the oil pressure sensor? I read another post about a problem like this and one repsonse was worn piston rings, but I have nothing else wrong the truck doesn't die and I don't smell gas in the oil like the other post that I read on here.

heh open the valve cover, if oil shoots in your face then the oil pump is working good. I replaced the sender on my 94 ram and the gauge still acts like a lazy bitch. But the truck runs fine.. go figure. Id try some motor flush.. such as seafoam.. go to napa or autozone..

My 96 Indy Ram is doing the same thing.
VERY iratic oil Pressure readings.
The oil level is fine and there is no bearing noise or knock or overheating.
It'll read 40 and while driving, drop to ZERO and then back up to 40 and then down to 20 and back up to 40 at idle.
I've asked the folks on the Dodge Indy am mailing list and the concensous is the il Pressure Sending Unit.
I'm taking mine to the Dealership to have it hecked out.

yeah im the oil light likes to come on when im in 4th gear... im thinking of running some motorflush through it.. maybe it has sludge in the rotors or something..

you must check oil pressure when engine is hot and at idle hot minimum specs is 6 psi and at 3000 rpm is 30-80 psi now keep in mind 6 psi is minimum and
if it was my truck i would like more than that at idle experience normally indicates if you are that low at idle something is just waiting to happen in engine do you have alot of mileage on engine with little maintanance??

I also have a problem with the fluctuating oil pressure on my '98 Ram. It has 175,000 miles and I bought it as used and as is. Also the oil level rises on the dip stick to above the full mark. I have changed the oil and made sure it was at the full mark. It rose above that by about a 1/4 of an inch.
Some one told me about gas getting into the oil. Can anyone tell me more about what may be going on? Thanks.
