They're completely different cars. I'd have to take the Evolution. I love the GTO's monstrous engine, sleeper styling, and low price (they are going for 25K constantly now), but the lack of refinement (poor pedal placement, sloppy shifter action, awkward suspension design) kinda ruins it. The Evo is blazingly fast, ultra-communicative, and plenty usable as a daily driver, as long as you like a firm ride. It's well worth the extra cost and reliability issues, in my opinion.

They're completely different cars..

People will compare just about anything these days. No one cross shops these cars. The GTO is aimed at people that were around when the "real" GTO was out. It has the mundane, conservative styling that will appeal to the "older" crowd and baby boomers. The EVO is the car for the F&F gen that think the ricerboy look is really awesome.

and in what way does the EVO look ricer?

1)the wing? thats functional and is adjustable and its made of real carbon fiber where you can literally lay across it and not break ( i saw a photo of this ),
2)how about the functional vented aluminum hood? ( you'd be amazed at how much heat is expelled from that radiator ),
4)how about the alumimum fenders?
5)how about the alumimum roof?
6) how about the vertex generators on the roof that smooths out the air flow goin over the car to help improve aerodynamics?
7) how about hte large front air dam for the front mount intercooler?

8)how about the passenger side damn for the oil cooler?
9) how about the brake cooling ducts underneth the front bumper?

10)how about the underbody aero dynamic defuser underneth the front bumper?
11)how about the 4 piston brembo brakes?
12) how about the super light weight BBS wheels that are even lighter then volk racing TE37's?
13) how about the inverted struts to reduce unsprung weight?
14) how about the active center differential?

yeah this car is really designed to be a ricer or all the looks is cheap autozone apc crap

give me a freaking break. that ricer looking car will run circles around your little boxster S. if all the stuff on it wasn't functional it would no perform the way it does. anyways congrats your car is slower then a ricer looking car with non fuctional tacky add ons ( pontiac styling )

Whoa, I obviously got someon's panties in a twist. The car LOOKS ricey and I would be embarrased to drive it, that's all I said. I never said the car performed poorly. Besides, the main point my post was not about how the evo looks. I'm not getting the "pontiac styling" thing though.

It was still a rude and out-of-place comment. You said that "The EVO is the car for the F&F gen that think the ricerboy look is really awesome." I am not a F&F riceboy, and I absolutely despise the entire car culture that those people have formed, yet I think the Evo looks really awesome. The wings, scoops, and air dams don't make the car look ricey at all. They make it look aggressive and raceworthy, and the fact they are all 100% functional and helpful to the car's performance vindicate them of any ricer parts stigma that they may have. I'm sorry that you're such a tight-ass that you'd be embarrassed to be seen driving a Japanese sedan that is faster than your German roadster, but don't come here and make stupid generalizations about cars and the people who drive them.

Get over it!!!!!!!!!

Honestly I have mucho respect for the numbers the Evo's and STi's put out. But would I own one over a GTO if I was paying? No way in hell cause ever time I see one I think god that is the most riced out looking thing I have ever seen. Now maybe it is from import owners watching rallying for years and stealing looks from the cars putting them on theirs and making the EVO's racing function look ricey but that is how it comes off to me and many other people.

And just because you got a hard-on for the Evo MR and can't understand that some people might find it's looks cheap and tacky. Does not mean you should start going off on a tyraid about the car he owns.

more then half the things i listed are for the reason of them looking like that. all the ricey things about it are all functional and not to mention that the body of the evo does go thru extensive wind tunnel testing to help reduce lift and add down force. that is by no means ricey at all, all those parts are functional.

also your not gettint he whole pontiac styling thing and your calling an evo tacky? look at the old grand-am or bonniville or gran prix and you see tacky non fuctional body cladding that they consider to be "exciting styling" yet no one ever complains about how ricey those cars look bone stock and they not only look ugly, they probrably add drag and slow the car down.

and on yeah a boxter is a really nice looking car  compared to the 911's they look like crap, and i've driven a boxter and they are disappointing slow and have no grunt at all.

i'm done i'm sick and tired of gettin heated from domestic owners calling a thing of forum and function rice yet they never look at their own cars.

i have no intention of offending anyone but i've must've defended this car atleast 10X's on this forum and no matter how many points i make they always ignore it, and its kinda dissapointing to hear that coming from you GTSTANG we never had bad blood before.

I really don't care if the car is faster than mine....so your wasting your breath. I could have bought a car like a Z06 if I wanted to blow everything away at "race night." Also, the EVO is marketed at a younger generation than GTO which is not a geralization just a fact. That was the whole jist of my point in the first place. i have nothing against the GTO in fact i love that car. i like the version with the LS2 more then the new stang GT's. i always like its clean understated looks. again different cars have different purpose so its goin to be designed to look different. but the way you stated it just made it seem like your dissing out the evo for no reason at all. also most evo owners are in the late 20's and mid 30's those are hardly considered to be highschool kids becsaue most of them can't afford a 30 K car. esp a 35K MR.

No, I understand that you were saying that the Evo is marketed towards a younger generation, but your argument has three flaws. First of all, the GTO may be a classic name, but RWD V8 coupes are pretty popular with young people too. Second of all, the Evo and the GTO are in the same price range, and anyone who has 35K to spend a sports car is probably not part of the "F&F ricerboy" group anyways. Third of all, and most offensive to me, is that not all young people, or people who find the Evo attractive, are part of the "F&F ricerboy" group. The Evo is a truly great car that captures the spirit and soul of racing like few cars can. It is not a fad like The Fast and The Furious, and as TatII said, to even insinuate that is, in my book, a sin.

You think this is ugly? I beg the differ. It definately holds it's own in a drag race as well. I have a pretty extensive kill list. I did not ignore your points but you have an obvious inability to to veiw things from any perspective than your own. As mad as you get for making all these points and feeling people are ignoring you, you are doing the same thing.

And many times when form follows function it creates something beautiful but these are not mutually exclusive and will always be dependant on perspective.

I can deal with the fact that you find beauty in the EVO and that you think a Stang is ugly and that is fine. But it is like so far beyond your comprehension that someone could find the Evo cheap and tacky and yes dare I say it ricey!

Honestly man you should take a step back, take a breath and try looking at it from someone else point of veiw cause you are just ranting and raveing like a fanboi. I'm not saying that to try to insult you but look at your posts in this thread and realize what your are argueing.

hmm, let's see, the evo's design was influenced by the wrc that it took part in. this was waaay before that film and the 'rice' culture.
that's another reason why your statement that the evo looks 'ricer' is ignorant and stupid.

alright i will admit that i stepped out of line alittle, and yes i'm not goin to put up a front, and i'll also admit that the boxster S is not a bad looking car. however i'm not a fan of the ordinary boxster with its really small wheels.

i may seem like a fan boy, and i don't find the stang ugly, i was just pointing out a few styling elements that woudl also be considered rice from our side of the camp. but your right, design that follows function will alway look ugly to some others. but i would never call a any functional item to be rice.

i feel the term rice is becoming a word that is being used too broadly. the term originally was meant for peoples attitude, and how their cars look like its dressed to run 10's when they can't even break out of 17's. also how they would put on unpainted body kits etc etc. but the evo by no means would ever be considered rice considering the fact that it never fit into any of those categories. thats what i pointed out by using your stang as an example becuase technically by definition your car is more rice then the evo.

thats all i'm stating. but yes i'm more calm now. thanks for not going nuts on me or threatening to ban me either GTstang.

The real stars — a vintage Hemi Dodge Challenger 426 and a Chevrolet Yenko Camaro, pitted against a severely tricked-out Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder and Mitsubishi EVO 7 — take the spotlight for the film's key race scene and also show up in the finale.

Notice the "tricked-out" Evo? Maybe this is perhaps why people can look at an Evo and think F&F? I think the truth of the matter is that the Evo, being a world renowned car prior to F&F, was simply adopted by this F&F culture even though some people would argue otherwise until the day they die.

So in conculsion, I do not find it offending if sombody simply says that an Evo looks like a 'tricked-out' F&F boasted car. I may not agree with them, but do I really care what they think? Big deal. Nobody is out to bash the car. Its simply a matter of personal taste.

Anyways, hopfully back on topic.

The only reason why I choose the GTO over the Evo is purely subjective. I prefer its conservative styling cue's, and the grunty V8 vs. edgy styling, and high pitched revy I4.

Nobody is out to bash the car. Its simply a matter of personal taste. That's fine, I respect his opinion and his right to have it, but calling an Evo a ricerboy car is just plain insulting. Mitsubishi has been building AWD turbo rally cars since the 1970's, and the Lancer Evolution in particular since 1992. The car has heritage, racing credentials, and a large aftermarket that is geared more towards performance than show. To degrade it by bestowing a title upon it such as a "ricer car" is uncalled for, and goes past the point of casually sharing your opinion. I think TatII summed it up pretty well:i feel the term rice is becoming a word that is being used too broadly. the term originally was meant for peoples attitude, and how their cars look like its dressed to run 10's when they can't even break out of 17's. also how they would put on unpainted body kits etc etc. but the evo by no means would ever be considered rice considering the fact that it never fit into any of those categories. thats what i pointed out by using your stang as an example becuase technically by definition your car is more rice then the evo. What does rice define? Giant wings and fins, fancy-looking exhaust pipes, and flashy interiors? If that's the case, domestics have been doing that since the 1950's, so the term shouldn't be "rice" at all. Rice is a state of mind. A car is ricey/riced out when it "looks" faster than it really "is". The Evo is every bit as vicious as it looks.

There's my 2 million cents. :sunglasse

#1. I think many of you should stop to give the definitive definition of the word rice. This a term used by too many people for too many years. Your definition of rice might be different from mine and vice versa.

#2 I mean I'm guessing that I am older than most of you cause my automotive years(having a license) and being out in the car scene was starting very much before the F&F ever came out. And guys were into the import scene and the word ricer was used way before the F&F ever existed. This movie honestly has no effect on my opinion of types of cars or the people who drive them etc.., My opinions and feelings have been formed much before that and will continually change but the movie has no impact. Hell I never even saw the F&F2!

#3 TatII look at #1... while yours is part of it for me it does not end there. Also I did not say the EVO was ricey as a whole(the performance is there!) but pertaining just to it's looks functional or not come across tacky, overdone, and in the end ricey. That is just by personal opinion on the look, it's like people see the Enzo and see beauty I see it and see uglyness. And don't worry some times in the fever to defend a car we like we get a lil carried away happens to all of us here myself included cause cars are our passions. Your a good member and know your level headed so I wasn't even thinking of banning you. LoL

no problem man. when you were referring to function doesn't always look nice the first car that came to mind was a ENZO. i just didn't want to be the first to bring it up because i thought it would get too out of hand if i thought the car didn't look that nice. however i give it mucho respect becsaue it can get away with looking like that because it basically looked like a covered up F1 car, so it looks nice in its own way, but its by no mean a classic looking ferrari.

anyways yes i knew the term rice was around for a long time. the first time i heard of that term was on a website like 3 years ago it was http://www.riceboypage.com/ or something like that before the first fast and the furious came out. i thought the page was hilarious becuase its soo true but alot of guys there didn't agree and he had plenty of hate mail. but yeah i was aware of the term ricer for a long time.

but there is a definitive wrong way to use the term rice in my opinion. like my car is by no means ricey lookin at all. but if someone comes up to me and laughs at my car and call it rice ( just for the fact that its a japanese import ) then that is definitly not right.

Anyone who says the Evo and STi look anything other than tacky needs thier eyes checked or needs to look at the Lancia Delta Integrale.

Yes the Delta had subtle wide-body treatments and very small spoilers/subtle vents yet went faster than anything similar in it's day and looked pretty damn muscular. Same goes for the Ford Sierra Sapphire Costworth. Makes all the obnoxious wings and vents on the Evo's/Impreza's look rather pointless to me.

That said I'd take a GTO over an Evo as well if I wasn't going to be hitting the track. Evo's are too crappily built and uncomfortable to justify it over the GTO as a daily driver. It's all different if you want a track-car, though.

TatII
03-08-2005, 11:29 PM
jimster you have a point about the lancia delta integrale, but back then those cars weren't as powerful, and they didn't have large front mount intercoolers. the intergrale uses a small top mount what looks to be less then half the size of the ones found on the STi or evo. so since it makes less power, the vents on the hood is not required to be as big ( but its still there ) and its hood scoup is not required to be as big becasue the intercooler is half its size, it doens't need the downforce cause its not as fast.

the orignal lancer looks very plain jane. but as the car got faster it required more things ( band aids you could say ) to make the car handle better, more reliable, and more efficient.

The thing I like about the EVO is it looks like a total sleeper car from the picture I've seen. You see it and don't think "that's a 300 horsepower car right there." Also, the little sucker can scoot pretty good from the stats I've seen.

The GTO's styling is like a Grand Am's but sticks out just enough to where people know it's a GTO. It has some performance to go with it but still it isn't the best buy for the buck. For a few thousand more I could have the same horsepower figures in a nice Corvette with better times.

My vote here goes to the EVO.

Oh yeah, the original Evo's were awesome, if you didn't look hard enough you would have thought it was Granny coming to pick you up in her Lancer GLXi Automatic, then when you looked closer you saw a pretty damn good looking car. The Evo II and III also looked good in that sense.

The biggest problem I have with the Evo VIII aside from the spoiler being too big is that the air-damn in the front bumper looks like someones mouth when they put thier fingers the corners and then stretch it out. And then there's the new corporate grille which I still can't get used to.

all the rally cars back then were like the lancia integrale, exterior wise. that was then, this is now. now they have new designs, and those big wings you see in wrc are actually suppose to work, better than the older designs. there are other wrc production cars that have big wings also besides the evo, and the sti. i bet those wings, and bumpers used on the sti, and the evo work better than the ones on the lancia intagrale. i dont like the way those new wings look in wrc, but they work.

How about we get back on topic?

Anyway, I would take the MR over the '04 GTO. I believe the MR is slightly quicker than the '04 GTO, but I've driven the LS2 '05 GTO, and that thing is supposedly faster than the Evo. I was impressed by how quick it was and the stock exhaust note is amazing. I'm not a big fan on the GTO styling though.

I have full respect for both cars; 04 GTO and EVOs. In terms of style, we can go on forever on argument. If someone calls it tacky in style so be it, I won't go crazy for your own opinion. Just don't think that the EVO, by its looks, is an "all show, no go" kind of car. You will definitely "not get any tonight" while your girl is on the passenger seat and this 2-litter car smokes you. If you do see an Evo on the road, give it some respect because for a 2.0 276hp turbo engine it can compete with the big boys in putting up impressive numbers. Take note those exterior design plays a huge role in this.
I have an EVO MR and I did impress a 03 Corvette, as we were running head to head from 50-120mph. I was quarter car length ahead. I bet he will get me around 150mph though but we had to slow down for traffic. :(
Style.
If you look into the Evo interiors you would see almost the same material used on a 12k car. I think they did not even bother on interiors because they focused on its performance... "Go forth and modify..."
I do respect the GTO also especially the 05 400hp 6.0 GTO. Watch out for this sleeper like car. I think I will create a new thread about the: 2005 Lancer EVO VIII MR vs. 2005 Pontiac GTO. I heard that they are equally matched but I've also heard stories where the 05 GTO smoked the MR at least 3 Car lengths. Please read, all opinions are acceptable.
