I will be getting a shuttle AK31 mobo, but one of them said it needed an updated BIOS for the Athlon XP CPU. I went to the website, and it had downloads. It also said how to install them. But, if the BIOS doesn't know the CPU, how could the computer even boot to DOS??

Good question. I actually am not sure if it would boot with a palomino. You might need to borow a old thunderbird do the bios update with it and after that put in the palomino.
What kind of chipset is the shuttle motherboard based on?
Personally i would recomend to get a new motherboard based on
K266A chipset wich can use ddr pc2100 or the new K333 chipset wich can use DDR pc 2700. MSI makes matherboards based on both and they are very reliable and is a way better brand than shuttle. They are cheap too the MSI kt266 pro 2 cost about 110$ it is based on the k266a chipset. and has as options usb2.0 and raid.

Yes, it is KT266A based, it is a really good board, I have read reviews, and they love it, really good. It has the VT8366A (north) and VT8233 (south bridge), made by VIA.

When you flash the bios, you get into by pressing something like shift alt del. It should tell you at the bottom of the screen when you first boot up. So it will be something similiar to getting into your PC's bios. Then you put in the disk with the info, and follow the prompts on the screen.
Hope that made some sort of sense. :bloated:

It is kind of weird that a kt266a based board would not support an xp out of the box. if i remember right the KT266A camed after the release of the xp's.

The thing is if your cpu is not supported by the bios the motherboard will not boot at all and you will not reach even the bios. also he is not flashing the bios but rather updating it wich is done by booting usually into a floppy and not from the bios.
So Cris bottom line is : either get a different motherboard or get your hands on a thunderbird -borrow one or got to a small computer store and give them 10 bucks to let you use one of theirs- update the bios and after that install the palomino. But be aware updating the bios is very dangerous it is used only as a last resort because if anything goes wrong that motherboard might become useless.

I know how to get into the bios, that wasn't the question.
Neutrino pretty much told me what to do (;) ), so I think I will search for a newer version of the board (it has 3 versions, the first one not supporting the XP right out of the box. Weird, but true)
Also, you could fix the mobo, just pull (simplified, but you get the idea) the BIOS chip off, and put on a new one:)
I was just thinking it might have been able to use the Athlon XP a bit, enough to modify the BIOS, anyway, just not do anything major (like run windows)
