just rumor...
but i read that the 2 series is being released but i don't think it will be a 2002 replacement per-say. the 2002 was the peak of their small-sporty-fun cars at the time. maybe the m3 is the nearest thing in production but even that seems a streatch. the 3 series was touted at the time(1975) as being the replacement for the 2002 but it was heavier and ran the same m10 engine.
the new 2-series is supposed to be an "economy" BMW rather oxymoronic but... anyhow what can you do MARKETING
hope that helps,
Jonas

frankly, if a 2 or 1 series is coming out soon, i dont see the point for the 3 series compact's existence... not that i ever did...

i think the use for the 3 series is the "performance coupe" catagory. if the 2-series is the "economy" and there are no 5-series coups it still leaves a "use" for the 3-series

2004 2 Series (Subcompact)
BMW announced that it would build a new car positioned below the current entry-level 3 Series. Though the 2 Series is set for a 2004 debut in Europe, plans have not yet been finalized for U.S. models.

I have no doubt that you are right. With BMW being one of the best in world and argueably the best, there's no reason that that car shouldn't have 800hp. Plus its a racing car and oh yea, with all that plastic, it must be pretty light. Wouldn't wanna crash driving that car:D

800 HP? Is that with a 2000 cc engine? I showed this post to my friends and they don’t believe that a 4 cylinder can make that much power, especially a BMW. But BMW has experience developing astronomically powerful engines for many years. In 1983 the Brabham Formula One team won the driver’s championship, thanks to their BMW engine. It had a 1.5 liter displacement and produced well over 1000 HP. Not many people know about it. Of course, it did have a huge turbocharger, from a truck!!

Especially a BMW??????? whats that about??? BMW arguably make the best engines in the world! 800bhp from a 4 cylinder is very possible..
The F1 engine developed 1400bhp from 1.5l, and that was in the eighties!

Yeah, I know!:smoka: I can't understand why that's so hard to believe?
And also 1400 hp was in quallifying, in the dyno tests it made over 2000 hp. And probably more because the dyno topped out at 2000hp!!!!!

I was talking about bhp, :smoka: you know on an engine dyno, not the back wheels. :smoka: But yes, it is quite possible, this was a Formula One engine for a very well funded team, :smoka: but you can imagine, part of the credit would have to go to the fuel they were using.
Nelson Piquet, the 1983 Formula 1 champion said that the Brabham had to be driven different style than other cars, "point and shoot":smoka: he couln't put the car on full throttle on any of the races, rear tyres broke loose even at 160 mph!!!

In regards to 800HP four cylinders. Hyundai has an 800 HP Tiburon that will be on the import drag circuit this year. So anything can be done if you have the money.

In regards to an 800 hp Hunday, who would whaste that amount of money on a Hunday, poor, mediocre people who are disgusted with driving buy Hundays. I was forced into driving a friend's Hunday once and I can say it was the most sickening experience.
Lately I've been seeying a lot of Honda and Hunday people in this BMW forum, we don't like your cars, so stop trying to get us to believe that Honda or Hunday are going to give us more for less.

First of all you need to learn how to spell Hyundai. Second of all who was saying it was better than the BMW. I did not buy a BMW just for fun.

The dyno maxed at 14k and they were thinking it ran about 17k. But they tuned it for about 1000 for racing purposes. They also used fuel developed in WWII for the luftwafe fighters. That is a recipe for power. And yes, it was a 1.5 block, not a 2002's M10. Different motors...

Yeah You're right! They used a very heavy fuel derrived from coal...the same stuff the Nazi Stukka fighter planes used. But they did use the M10 motor...the 60's BMW 1600 to the 80's 318, they all use the M10 engine, its all in there in the bmwworld:
http://www.bmwworld.com/engines/m10.htm
It sounds absolutely incredible, but the world`s most powerful Grand Prix engine was based on a production block! That was taken from the 1969 presented type 2002 and reduced from original cubic capacity of 2.0 litres to the 1.500 ccm the Formula One regulations had allowed for turbocharged engines. To reduce inner tentions within the engine blocks BMW only took those ones that had done more than 100.000 kilometres - " they are like well-hung meat,"
