I just got a 97GT. I was just curious as to what are some of the most mileage people have gotten on these vehicles (around 97 to 2000 model year) without any major engine/transmission work. Just wondering when I should start expecting something major to go wrong. Is any one near the 200,000 mile mark on the odometer?

I have 138,798.
No major problems just a few things
1. Intake manifold around 120,000
2. Valve cover gaskets 138,798. Oil is leaking onto the Exhaust manifolds.
3. O2 Sensor 138,798.

I got a 97 GPGT and has 158,000 miles. The only major problem has been the water pump and thats it. Everything else is pretty much small stuff like the blower resistor and other little things...i have been very lucky! Well its my faith....

And now it revs itself up and down for a few seconds when it starts, Havent taken it in yet.
and some other failures like air fan, sunroof stuff .

I had a fully loaded 95 with 500,000 on it. I commute two hours a day.
All I ever did was fluids and tuneups never had any problems but interior electrical crap that I never fixed but other than that it was a great car.
The day I took it in to pick up my 99gt I ran the hell out of it smoked it every way I could just to see if something would brake and nothing did.
My 99 has 160,000 on it so far MAF needs to be replaced and The heater core in the seat is broken other than that this seems to be another great car.

When I was out car shopping for my GTP i went to a local dealership and asked the salesman if they had any and from his mouth he told me "You don't want a GTP the blowers go out around 80 - 120k, they are crap and overrated." I think he just wanted me to buy his Oldsmobile Aurora, but i just couldn't picture myself behind the wheel of that thing.
From what i have heard and understand the 3800 is suppose to be a pretty reliable engine. We had an old van with the 3100 and it had 270k miles on it and me and my brother drove the hell out of that thing, only reason it isn't running now is because my brother never put oil in it and ran it dry.
In my family we always joke and say that GM stands for God Made, sometimes it sure feels like it and sometimes it doesn't.

I had water on the passenger side once to it was the drain for the air conditioner.
On the firewall on the passenger side under the hood theres a little rubber elbow some how it had a 1/2in piece of gravel plugging up the end and the water would just leak inside.
I pulled the gravel out and a quart of water came pouring out.
I have no Idea how a piece of gravel would get in there but it was there

My '98 GP GT has 143,400 and the only problems have been from normal wear and tear. I am still quite happy--except for I can't get the key out of the ignition, I have to use a screwdriver for the shift release, then the radio quit 2 days later, and on the 3rd day, none of the windows or moonroof are working!! It's going in the shop tomorrow. My repair man knows it's electrical but doesn't know where to start. I have faith in Pontiac AND in my mechanic. Anyone got any ideas?

I was haveing a similar problem with my 98' when I first got it. I changed the battery in it because it would also have no charge after I would drive it a short distance and sometimes it wouldn't start right off the get go. My key would get stuck in the ignition module also and I think it has to do with the car not getting enough power to release it or something?
A few weeks later the car would randomly die on me as I was driving (not just stop running but EVERYTHING would cut out) I had no power no engine nothing and key wouldn't back out of ignition. Later when me and a co-worker looked at the car we noticed that the positive battery terminal had a bunch of corrosion. We scraped that off and I haven't had any problems since.
Might just double check the terminals and see if there is any corrosion and if there is clean it off and see if that helps and maybe even replace the battery.
Good luck Mostro186

Thanks for the info rawr256! My mechanic found it to be the ignition switch--an apparent common problem for many, many models (not just GM either). I'm just glad they found the problem and my baby GP GT is going to be alright. Hope everyone out there thinks of this if/when it happens because it just might! I don't know how much the repair is but it's always worth it when it comes to my Grand Prix GT--the best wheels I've ever owned! Peace.

I think I'm lucky like the rest of you guys. I inherited my father's 98 GTP a few years back and only have had a couple things,
1. Replaced both Front wheel/bearing assemblies
2. Replaced front valve cover gasket (leaking onto exhaust manifold)
3. Heater core leak
4. Replaced a couple Ball Joints
5. Replaced both mufflers
My brakes are acting kind of funny. It seems like there is a lot of pedal movement before I finally start slowing down real good. Any suggestions on brake upgrades?
Oh yea cosmetically it looks good except for the fact that some ass backed into me in a parkign lot and ran. BAstard broke the left turn signal, curled the driver side corner of the hood down and messed up that corner of the bumper. May Karma punish him severely!

I have 198,000 and I have a miss on cylinder 2, the AC compressor seal went out last summer. Replaced a window motor, factory radio, stuts. Just normal stuff for a high milage car. The miss is the biggest problem for me but I have been driving it like that for the last 50k. One of these days i'll fix it. I think it is the intake manifold leaking.

remember when reading the problematic threads, they also post some fast ET's, meaning they thrash their cars pretty hard. My 91 winter beater has 235,000 on it and I've never done anything but regular maintanence and a water pump, that's it. And the water pump is the easiest job in the world on a 3.1, it cost $20 and took about 40 minutes, 15 of which was scraping the old gasket off.

This question is for the ones with intake manifold problems. How did you come to the conclusion that you had a bad intake or intake leak. I have a miss on number 2 cylinder on my 98 GT. I have replaced everything or a least swapped some parts to try to resolve this problem. My next step was to take the intake off. I replaced the plenum already.

I have a 2000 GP with 3.1. I purchased it used with 81K on it. SO far so good. Had to do some minor repairs like changing the light bulb in the digital display of the radio and replacing the rear speakers as they had been blown out by the prvious owner. I had the front Oxygen sensor go out according to the codes, but after replacing that, I'm not so sure as the SES light came back on again. Runs fine and gets good mileage. May have to take it to a dealer to determine why the SES is back on.

1999 GTP
229,000 miles of commuting pleasure (My GTP is the only pleasant thing about doing 100 miles a day)
- front hubs replaced twice
- struts replaced at 150K
- lost count of brake and rotor replacements - 3 I think
- on third set of tires
- fuel pump at 225K - cost $600 P&L to replace - should have done it earlier myself and I wouldn't have had to pay a mechanic, but this is the only time the car failed me and I had to have it towed.
- ac needs a recharge right now
Best car I've ever owned, I'm going for 300K before I even think of replacing her! I have run Amsoil oil and tranny fluid since 4K and I attribute longevity of engine and tranny to use of 100% synthetic fluids.

99 GTP Coupe. 231,154 miles. Two hour commute a day combined stop and go and highway miles.
Only failed to start once - fuel pump 210K - $800 to fix. I should have done it myself with the $250-300 pump and my free labor, but had to have the car back in service quick.
MAF replaced at about 180K
Struts at 135K
Supercharger coupler at 140K
Super charger oil change twice - 100K and 200K
All belt tensioner pulleys changed at 210K - One broke, so I replaced them all.
Front hubs replaced twice - Once at 130K, but problem reappeared in 20K, so mechanic replaced them free of charge.
Tie rod ends at 130K
Brakes replaced three times
On third set of tires
I've used Amsoil oil and filter in the engine and Amsoil synthetic tranny fluid since 4K. I change the oil and filter every 10K.
This is the best car I've ever owned. Comfortable, stable and fast.

I've owned 3 GP's...
'94 SE coupe, had 106,000 when I got rear ended and totalled it, still ran great, never had a problem.
'97 GTP sedan, had 161,000 when I drove into a Ford F250 (check my gallery for pics of the car after that happened), only problems I ever had with it was the rack & pinion, but there was a recall on those, so it was fixed for free, and the idler pulley for the supercharger locked up, so I had to replace both the idler and tensioner pulleys. Other than that, it was great.
Current car, '99 GTP coupe, 117,000 on it. Had a bit more trouble out of this one...had to have one front wheel bearing replaced around 99,000, and around 106-107,000 had to have the tranny rebuilt because overdrive stripped out of it. Still no clue how that happened. Also had to replace an O2 sensor. Other than that, it's been fine.
The Series II 3800s are good engines if they're cared for...make sure you perform all your maintenance on schedule, and if it's a GTP, make sure to keep a check on the supercharger oil. It should last you a while if it's been taken care of.

I bought my 98 GTP in 2003 with only 16,000 miles. After two years I just reached the 40,000 mark, which I love, being that it is a 7 year old car. But though the low mileage, here are the problems Ive had.
1. Driver side window motor, track, and switch (and after fixing it, it sometimes still doesnt work right)
2. Windshield leak which is getting my ceiling and (supposely) my floor wet. (still have to get that checked and fixed)
3. A pulley replaced because it wobbles back and forth (cant remember which one it is)
4. All four of my speakers have seen better days (I'll take some of the blame on that one :) )
5. And the one thats gets me the most upset is my rear view mirror is broke. The goop or whatever inside of it, to dim the headlights, leaked all over the glass of the mirror.
Overall I still love the car, hopefully with the low miles it will last for many more years.

After reading your most resent post GTPgirl, I have a question. You posted that a wheel barring needed replaced. I think I have one bad too, but could you post what it sounded like and so forth? thanks

My mirror has been changed twice. Was using wind sheld "covers". The heat from them would toast the mirror. Also found if you leave them "off", it doesn't happen.
Good luck.

Having had a number of WBs replaced on several of my GPs, I'll chime in...
It's usually a "rough" sound, a grinding noise, it is after all metal on metal. It's also not usually a constant hum, but more of a hum-hum-hum that increases/decreases with speed.
This morning I was out with a friend and his Saturn sounded like it had a bad WB, but he said it's actually a messed up tire, and he was having it replaced today.
Sometimes it's difficult to even tell which side of the car it's coming from. You can do some process of elimination by rotating your wheels to ensure it's not a tire.
Will you be doing the work yourself?

Mine was more of a squeaking or squealing noise...I had a hard time figuring out which side it was on. I finally deduced which side it was on by having someone else drive while I rode in the passenger seat. (windows down, naturally) I couldn't hear it nearly as much from that side, so I figured it was the driver's side.
I also had to replace the window switch and motor in my '99...driver side. It still has problems, but only if I roll it all the way down so that you can't see the glass at all. As long as about 1/8" of it is still visible above the rubber, it's fine. So I can't use my express-down. I forgot about that in my post.
I also had the problem with the goop in the mirror of my '97...when I bought the car, had to have the oil pan sealed (factory defect, had a recall on it). The first week I had the car, the mirror was fine. After I took it and had the oil pan sealed, and got it back, the goop was in my mirror. I still don't know what happened. I hardly ever think to use the auto-dim on the mirror in the '99, so maybe it won't get that way.

The oil pan gasket is a recall on the '97s. I had to have the one in my '97 done right after I bought it. I hope you took it to a dealership and got it fixed for free...

Well, yeah. I had mine done...oh...3 years ago in July? It's been a year since I wrecked the '97. My dad (retired GM mechanic, was still working at the time I got the car) knew it was a recall when we bough the car, so you shouldn't have any trouble getting it replaced.

You can check Autosite.com (http://www.autosite.com/content/own/service/index.cfm/action/recalls?CPCID=22041-0-0-0-1336-60-0-0&id=22041), among others, for recall info. They show two for the 97 GT, the PS rack and a wiper recall. I didn't see the oil pan. It's best to check with the dealer though. There was a recall for my '02, and they don't show it online.
