My dad just bought a 91 taurus wagon GL with 60,000 original miles on it. Every now and then the service engine light cuts on and I can't find the damn diagnostics port on it. so I'm kinda stuck trying to figure out how to check this damn thing for codes. it has a 3.8L V6 and a 3 speed tranny. it is a very nice car and very clean but the airbag light stays blinking constantly. I basically know this wagon has a (OBD I) system on it, I just can't find the gawd dern diagnostics port. Most every vehicle I've ever seen with (OBD I) the terminal was underneath the steering column, not this one. Autozone already told me that they couldn't check the computer on it because they only check (OBD II) systems, they told me that it HAD to be 1996 or newer. I'm about aggravated at this car and it's not even mine!
ANY help would be appreciated.

Should be under the hood on passender side next to firewall and inner fender in corner.

If it's in the same place as it is in a 91 Thunderchicken I should be able to find it. Do I retrieve codes from it the same way that I would with any other OBD I system, you know the check engine light flashing deal. If not how do I get them outta this car?

Try that site. There are 2 ways to retrieve codes. If the check engine light flashes, count flashes. If light does not flash, use analog meter or test light. Count sweeps on meter or flashes on test light.

I thought that it helped but it didn't clarify a single gawd damn thing. If anything I'm more confused than before.

Stoned, I believe you can pick up a code reader for the older models at any parts store. It will come with instructions on how to set it up and read the flashes to determine what code caused the check engine light to come on. The plug in for the code reader should be where they said it was, in the engine compartment on the passenger side up near the hood hinge. It may look like a medium size plug that should have gone to something and was never plugged in. Good Luck.

I had a 91 Taurus with the smaller v6, 3.0 ltr. or 3.1. The check engine light and the airbag light were on for 7 of the 8 years I owned it. It had about 162,000 on it when I sold it. The new owner said he didn't mind that the lights were on. He has been driving it for about 2 years now. On the one I had , there was some sort of a pig-tail plug under the hood near the firewall over on the passenger side. It was for hooking in a code reader.
