Compression question

If some one wanted to turbo something whats a good compression ratio for the engine? some one told me 10.5:1 is good.

lower is better for FI. i would go with 9:1 or 8.8:1 like the evo

Id golower even just for safety sake. 8.5 is what I run on my talon. Then I run 25 psi, and dont have to worry about blowing a head gasket or anything.

yeah 8.5 is good too. i havent seen any 8:1 made for this car

Sorry for being a idiot to compression. But what does it do/mean. the more i understand the less likely i will be to blow/mess anything up.

its the degree to which the air/fuel mixture is compressed before ignition.

ex. 8:1 compression ratio means that the air/fuel mixture is compressed to 1/8 of its original volume

so with saying that, the more you compress, the more power or less? Which is better- more fuel or air. Both maybe? i don't understand to much of mixing.

forced induction compresses the air/fuel molecules tighter. instead of the piston sucking in the air, air pressure is at a constant being "forced" into the cylinder. more fuel is required to compete with the extra air being forced into the cylinder, hence why a larger fuel pump and larger injectors are needed.

howstuffworks.com is a good place to look up these kinds of questions.

if you are going to run a N/A motor, then high compression pistons are better for the reason that you will be able to compress more.

however, when running FI, its already being compressed. you know that when you compress air, it heats up. so if you have the turbo compressing the air and the pistons with a high compression ratio, then you have some serious heat issues.

too much heat = bye bye motor

The 3G RS/GS with the 4G64 has 9:1 CR already. If you are planning on running more than ~13psi worth of boost, plan on lowering the CR to 8.5:1 with a set of forged internals.

hey johnnybgood, send me a free turbo kit 2.4L and ill put a huge advertisement for your company on my car...haha just the 8.5psi kit..haha..that would be nice.

ha, good luck with that.

:) yea... that's not going to happen :)

So the more i compress, the more heat and the less i compress the less heat? And if i was running turbo would i need an inter cooler to compress more?

the intercooler is used to cool the air that is already compressed. which would allow you to be able to compress more air safely...ie. higher boost

I know this is a fast response (i have any new post fowarded to my cell phone so i never miss anything)

Cool. ok here is something far fetched. Could i run a dual opposite sides mount intercooler? or would that cause lag or heat. Cause when i get my 2000+ eclipse, I want to be real unique. it is more fun to boost somethin that is never already boosted safely.

if you can find room for 2 intercoolers inside the V6 engine bay go for it, but i doubt there is room unless you get a tiny intecooler, and that is a lot of piping and would create lag
on the 4cyl. it'd be better to get a huge fmic

Now i see

i dont see the room for a side mount on the passenger side. there is plenty of room on the driver side
