mercury tracer need answer

I was my '93 tracer and all of a sudden my speedometer stopped working and car (automatic) wouldn't shift out of first. I can only go about 15mph then the rpm's just top out. Last night it shifted again, but I know something is still wrong. Could they be connected? Could it be a sensor?
