I'm wanting to add a few more things to my truck so I can run at the track some this spring. I know I'll need a shift kit and sevo first so I can get all my TQ Mgmnt removed and all. What kinda shift kit should I look into getting? A transgo I know, but any certain kind?

I also would like to add a cam. Any suggestions on what kind I should get? Money is a big concern, I'm on a tight budget right now.

Also headers. Any particular brand I should know about?

Keep in mind I'm ona tight budget and money is a concern here.

Also any tips on how to launch at the track will come in handy. I've never done it before and I dun wanna look stupid.

thanks alot for the info.

..... about the launch

Well, wanting to race and having a tight budget can be done, BUT its really good to already have the stuff you need.

Basically, if I were you, I'd just take the truck as it is, enter in the 1/4-mile or 1/8th Trophy class (make sure its a footbrake class only, you sure don't want to be running against anybody with a trans. brake or delay box). Its all about consistency, and slower vehicles are more consistent then fast ones, and when you go to a track, you'll be bracket racing (nothing at all to do with speed, but everything to do with consistency).

So, I'd just take the truck as it is for now, and just see how you like it AND learn the basics of it. Actually, I'd just go and watch for one weekend (provided you haven't already been watching).

As for staging and launching, well just don't get up there and try and stage with yoru back tires (It happens alot more then you would think). For a good launch, try holding your brake and the gas, and try and get the RPMs to around 1000 or so and just go about 3/4 throttle (just enough to slightly slip the tires without just going up in smoke) untill you think it won't spin, then go WOT (who knows, maybe you can go WOT as soon as you launch without tearing the tires off)

Also, don't wait on the green light to come on when you leave. If you do this, you will not win a race. You probably should leave on the bottom yellow light, maybe even sooner (like maybe just as the 2nd yellow is going off). Trust me on this. You'll have a slow roll out time and so basically, if you launch just as the 2nd yellow goes off and the bottom comes on, then by the time your truck reacts and actually moves, it will be time to go, and you should have good reaction times by doing so, and the tree is where races are won or lost.

EDIT: Also, you might want to talk to SlowProcess about the launching those trucks because he would know much more about it then me. I've never raced my truck at the track (plus its a 92, so it would react different then yours). He'll probably see this thread and give you some advice on launching, but trust me on which yellow light to leave on (again, if you wait untill you see the green, you may as well turn in the opposite direction of the return road and go home).

I just installed a Transgo Reprogramming Kit in my 96 Impala SS and I am very happy with the results. Part Number is 4L60E-HD2. The Corvette Servo is the servo you want (same as the one in my Impala) and only cost around $20. The kit will take care of the TQ Management issues.

I havce that exact same kit. How difficult is it to install? Some friends and I are going to tackle it this or next weekend. I have a tranny service manual on the way, just in case.

Also, if I install this kit...does this mean that I do not need a to get a tune (like a nelson tune), Will this get me better shifts? Actually, I know it is a stupid question, and please, I am sorry for asking such a stupid question, but when you guys say that a shift kit gives you firmer shifts, how does that feel? I would like to add a shift kit, but I want it to feel like you don't feel any shifting, that it shifts smooth, will this kit solve the problem? What does 'firmer' shifts mean? Sorry, guys bout the dumb question....

Hey jev, if you mess with that cam its going to get expensive i would imagine. Bigger cam =bigger injecters and whatever else is involved in making that work, you will need lots more fuel. If your going racing in the future and you want to get into that motr you should probably start from the bottom end of the motor and work your way up to the cam. That way you will only have to do it once,hopefully....jj
Save up your pennies and do it right the first time...jj

Oh ya,you probably read that Slowprocess thread, ware he said you do not want to take all of the torque managment out of your computer. The guy at nelsontune recomends taking out no more then 60% tqm i think i would have to find it and reread it...jj

he recommends no more than 60 percent if you do not have a shift kit

Sorry that I did not see this sooner. I had never done a valve body removal before so I really took my time with project. I also had to remove my passenger side cat to get at the servo (I replaced all the seals in the servo plus what the parts in the kit). Removing the cat and bending a heat shield mount took me over an hour. Plus the added time to put it all back together.

All together I spent about 8 hours on this project but remember I had a lot of extra work that you will not have to do on a truck (because you can get at the servo easily).

It is important to note which bolts go in which holes. I used a small parts organizer to keep track of which bolts are which. It really was not too hard. The instructions are written for a transmission rebuilder and I had some questions. If you have the kit, make sure you read the instructions and get any questions answered before you start. Either call Transgo directly, search this forum or post on this forum.

You will need a pair of snap ring pliers to remove and install the boost valve.

Feel free to email me directly if you have any questions.

No computer reprogramming is required with this kit (4L60E-HD2). This is more than a shift kit. It fixes some issues with the 4L60E.

Yes the kit will give you better shifts. The firmness of the shifts is configurable by the person installing the kit. I installed this on my 96 Impala SS because I wanted the tranny to last a long, long time. This kit will help the tranny live longer. I did not go for really firm shifts. My shifts are smooth and quick. The more throttle the firmer the shifts.

The 3-1 downshift and 4-2 downshift are also much faster now (and much smoother). I am very happy with this kit.

I also found these valve body removal instructions to be very helpful: http://www.teamtripp.com/vbreplace.htm

If fact, I purchased by kit from Team Tripp and was very happy with the service and support.

here, in Indy, IRP (home of the Drag Nationals) hosts an amature night every Tuesday. Dosen't matter what you have, motorcycle, muscle car, import, truck, pinto. As long as you have ten bucks, you can race. The tree is set up, they have medics and fire personal on standby. Its good fun, legal and as safe as possible. I would imagine that there are places around close enough to anyone that have amature drag racing, like mentioned above, at least I would hope so.

I plan on going to the track myself, while there are few people there, make a run, add a mod, make a run, add a mod ect.. to see how much each little bit helps. Kind of a poor mans Dyno. :icon16:

Any way, Have fun
