Does anyone else have this problem?

Whenever it's cold, and my truck hasn't warmed up yet, my S10 doesn't want to change into the highest gear. I have to drive about 45 mph. until it finally shifts into 4th. (It's an automatic). Does anyone know what causes this?

Are you talking about the torque converter lockup? It feels like an additional shift on most cars. It does that so it reaches optimal operating temperature quicker. See if the RPM picks up when you shift into drive.

I didn't know if it was supposed to stay in lower gear like that or if I had a problem. Now I know that I don't. :) I've also noticed that additional shift in there; even in 2nd or 3rd gear, when the temperature reaches a certain point, I can hear what sounds like it shifting into a slightly higher gear.

This is normal, it won't lock in until the engine is in closed loop.

So do I. This is probably the easiest solved problem I'll ever have. :(
