I was wondering if anybody here would know how to fix my speedometer, fuel, rpm, all of those odometers on there. They all read incorrectly, and, I'm not to sure on how to fix it.

My car is also having an excessively stalling issue but I've already read around with the main solution of a faulty ECM, which, I will be replacing soon.

If anyone could help me out with information about all of the "odometers" reading incorrectly could help me.
ex. I'll be going 20 miles an hour and it'll say I'm going 50. Or I'll be going 65 and it'll say I'm going 120. Shrug...

All help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you...

that can also be attributed to a bad computer or faulty speed sensors.

The prom in the ecm is what controls the axle ratio, vehicle components, ect. You may only need to replace the prom and not the complete ECM.

Alright, thank you for the help.

Do you know where I can go to get a new PROM ?

Thanks.

You can only get one from the Pontiac dealer. You will need the complete VIN number. You may find one in the scrap yard, but it has to be exact year and engine or else the axle ratio will be different and your speedo will register about 15 mph off.

Yesterday I've replaced my PROM. Now... Do you know how long it'll take for everything to adjust and if this was the case of the car stalling, how long would it take for it to balance it out?

Any other help or information would be appreciated.
Thank you :)

Whats your engine doing now that you replaced it? Mine would idle up and down from 1000 to 500 very rapidly until it would shut off. Then it would restart and do it again at the next stop. After I put about 20 miles on it, it straightened out.

My stalling never went away though. It was still present just not as bad anymore.

But that doesn't even matter. I was driving the other day and I stopped at a red light, I stopped completely, shifted into park like usual, then rev'ed my engine when it felt like it was going to die... But when I went back into Drive it wouldn't change gears or something.

I'm not sure if the linkage is broken on the transmission, the gears are sticking, or, if the tranmission is completely toast. Nonetheless, I got a replacement car that same night.

(1984 Volvo DL) which runs completely perfect without any problems at all. ALthough if I can still save my good ole' pontiac then I'd like to know.

Do you know of any faulty anything which may cause the transmission to fail? Or... Could you give me a definition or description of what a completely toasted transmision is?

I could push it into Drive, and, just slowly floor it... it would move very little.... I couldn't reverse or anything. We'll see.

All feedback will be greatly appreciated... lol.

Thanks.

Does ther oil smell burn't??
I would change the oil and filter and also replace the valve above the filter that causes the engine to stall when put in gear.

There isn't a burnt oil smell and I put new oil in a month ago. The stalling isn't even the main problem at all anymore.

It's the transmission, now. I think it's broken or maybe there's something else wrong with it.

Like I said above... I can move my gear from park to drive, to 1,2, etc... but it feels like it doesn't change or something. I can put it into drive and just floor it... It won't move at all. So... I'm not sure if the gears are sticking, the transmission is messed up, or the linkage broke on the transmission (which means it's really not even changing gears).

I was driving on the freeway and I got off.. and went down the street some more. When I came up to a red light, I put the car into park and rev'ed it when it felt like it was going to stall... I went to put it back into Drive, and, it wouldn't move. The engine would just rev. I couldn't figure it out and I had to push it from the turn lane into a neighborhood street where I got it towed back to my house.

If what I just said could give you a more clear vision of what the problem is, then, please help me out.

Thanks a lot, I appreciate your continuous help.

1) Transmission is gone
2) Linkage on Transmission is broken
3) Gears are sticking.

Those are the only three that I can think of... If you have more ideas then please add onto the list, lol.

Thanks.

IF it happened all of the sudden, I doubt the trans took a dump. I would bet either the shift cable broke, became disconnected, or bound up and the car is stuck between gears. Look under the hood between the engine and firewall while standing on the drivers side. Have someone in the car moving the shifter from park to low then back and see if the linkage is moving. Make sure the car isn't running so you don't run yourself or the cat over, do it with the key on and engine off.

Now that I think about it... I don't think that it's the shifter that I was able to still change from gear to gear... I put it into drive while the car was on so I could push it more easier...

Do you know what else it could be ? I did put in some transmission fluid which jiffy lube did give me, but, it didn't seem to affect anything at all at the time. I've started the car up today and it's the same problem.

Does that mean that the transmission is messed up for good, or, something else ?

I can change from gear to gear, but, when I push the gas nothing happens, it just revs.

Should I try to empty all of the transmission fluid and fill it up again with all fresh transmission fluid ? ( When I chekced it at the time, it was a nasty brownish color, looked like old oil ).

Any help will is appreciated. Thanks...

( Sorry for all the questions, I just can't figure this out ).

It's okay to straight up tell me that it's messed up for good, though hehe.

Thanks again.

i think you should do that flush, and filter change.
but i fear that if you waited to long. the damage is done. i think i would stop messing around and get it towed in. i prefer dealership. they can tell you if there is a loss of prime fault code or something.
i would definately bring it in.
