steering wheel

never noticed it before, but i have about 1/2 inch lateral movement in my steering wheel. i pulled up on it and thought it was going to come off at first. (scared the crap out of me!) maybe im overreacting, but now it seems like the steering is alot heavier (if that makes sense) I'm thinking the rack is going bad. any other thoughts?
