fender light covers...

I was thinking, instead of getting clear corners, I wanted to cover them. I saw a VW that had his corner lights (the ones on the fenders) covered with what looked light vynl tape that matched the body color, but when you turned on your headlights, the color would still show (orange). Not sure if that made sense but I was wondering if anyone had done this before and what they did to make it work. What kind of tape or cover did you use and where can you get it? Thanks! :)
