Had a run in with a GTO.

My friend from MI decided to spend a few days here since Im on spring break right now. She hasn't seen the contour since its gotten the 3.0L swap and turbo kit, so I decided to take her for a ride tonight. First run in was with a Hyundai Tuscani, which is the Asian model of the Tiberon. Not sure if it was the real deal or just a Tiberon badged as a Tuscani. Regardless, he did the fly by and I caught up and blew right past him. I slowed down and matched his speed and about 20 mph and hit it from there. Put a few cars lengths on him almost immediately. I shut it down around 80 mph.
Next run in was with a Pontaic GTO. :icon16: It was silver and some kid was driving it by himself. I again dropped it in second and we were both cruising at about 40 mph. We both hammered it at the same time and I jumped ahead a couple feet. By 3rd gear, he gained what i jumped on him and we were both even. Shifted to 4th and we were both doing about 110 mph and nobody was gaining. I figured it was time to shut it down considering it was a 45 mph zone. Not sure who would have won if we kept going, but it was a good race considering it has 350 hp and almost half the displacement. By the looks of how he shifted, it appeared to be a manual. Both runs were done on 4 psi as usual. I really need to put my boost controller back on. :grinno:

I would have loved to see the look on the GTO drivers face when a Contour was running side by side with him :lol2:
Nice races..

Some of those GTOs are real slouches. Well, the autos atleast. Good job though!

Good kill. Hanging with a GTO from a roll is no easy task.

good race but do you know which model/year it was?

Nice races. You were at 4psi eh? Thats defiantely a plus for hanging with a GTO. BTW what do you normally run with the boost controller installed?

Good kill. Your car is a real sleeper. I'd never guess that a contour would have as many mods as you do. Have you taken your car to the track, and if so, what were your times?

I havent taken it to the track since it just got its final tune a couple weeks ago. I havent taken it above 8 pounds yet, but Ive built it for high amounts of boost. (i.e. 8.5:1 Ross Racing pistons, Pauter Rods, pnp heads, etc). I hope to take it up 15-17 psi this summer. Contour's with similar mods and turbo's are putting down ~400 whp, so I hope to do the same.
PS. A guy from over on contour.org posted a for sale in the forced induction branch on here a couple weeks ago. Hes got a 400 whp 2.5L svt contour.

apparently you havent seen the video of the 10 second GTO using N20. It was an auto.

Yep, I saw stock autos running 14.2s, and 13.9s. But I saw a stock manual run a 13.1.
BTW: we're talking about the new GTOs, right?

The old automatic equipped GTO's stunk, but the new one's are definitely quick, and the automatic versions should be no different. To be honest I see almost all automatic equipped cars running better times then the manually different ones. This especially holds true when one has a torque converter and drag radials.

all automatic trans missions have torque converters. . . and no manuals are almost always faster than automatics.

I believe he meant one that is upgraded from the stock converter, different stall and all that.
Auto vs Manual in the GTO I dunno if the stick is that much more faster. From what Pontiac says on their website it has a somewhat more performance oriented torque converter then what you see in the F-bodies so it comes close to the 6-speed. From what I understand that 6-speed isn't as good as the Hurst manual shift in the F-bodies either.

he's talking about an aftermarket torque converter... something with a bit higher stall.
It's the same principal as saying you're going to get a header for your car. It's already got a header, just we don't call the stock header a 'header' it's the exhaust manifold... get it? Kewl.

I wouldn't consider 14.2 or 13.9 second cars "slouches". Thats a semi-potent street car if you ask me.

Well, I mean..for the power..they're rated at 350 some hp. I'm rated at 260. And I run 14.1s.

Yes, but whatever HP advantage they have is lost in their yacht-like curb weight...Oh yeah I saw a silver one in the school parking lot today (2004). Nice looking cars, don't see why no one seems to like the styling...looked inside just for kicks and it was nicely laid out too, I liked it.

they're also 3700lbs, and they come fully optioned...standard.
There is no "base" model with the GTO. Not unless they bring out the Judge.

Dude that would be insane if they released a high-performance Judge model......It would definitly be the 7.0L powerplant from the new Z06......droools
I think it would also be a hit if Pontiac released a rag-top GTO with the 06' Sigma based platform

I think Pontiac should scrap the GTO, and bring back a cool version of the Chevelle 454 SS.

Well, Chevrolet would have to be the ones to do that, becuase the Chevelles were Chevrolets, not Pontiacs, lol.
Don't be suprised if you see the Chevelle name resurrected in about 2007 or 2008. When the new American designed/built GTO comes out, Chevrolet will be getting their versoin of the car/platform, and its either going to be a Chevelle or a Monte Carlo.

the 05 GTO has the performance appearance package, with the hood scoops and stuff. they finally fixed the exhaust placement, i mean, they bragged about "true dual exhaust" and the pipes exited on the same side! now they split them :) i like the look of the GTOs, except for the fact that it looks a lot like a grand prix/grand am...MAKE A DIFFERENT LOOKING PONTIAC! like the solstice ^^
street_racer_00
03-08-2005, 03:34 PM
Well it was a true dual exhaust, because the exhaust exited from two competely different ports, they just put the pipes on the same side, for reasons unbeknownced to me.

03-08-2005, 06:25 PM
i didnt say they lied about it, i knew it was true duals, it was just retarded that they had it exit the same side

the GTO without the performance package...is..bland..which I think that would be an understatement.

Pontiac Chevelle.. haha..that's as bad as this kid in school saying "Oldsmobile GTO". And his dad has a 69 charger and he takes it to shows and stuff...so I'd think he'd know atleast just a tiny bit about cars.

Cost efficiency, GM wanted another RWD sports car, but they gave Pontiac and Mr. Lutz a limited budget, and a short amount of time. To save cost they held off on changing the rear fascia to much, as well as many other body panels from the Holden platform. As they get farther and farther away from that platform however the GTO will start coming into it's own. People just need to be patient.

gtos r awesome but they do need a little bit of a face lift in the body and if chevy does anything hopefully its to resurrect the long lost CAMARO.
neways good job hanging with gto its good as a kill in my eyes, hanging with a gto hard already hard w/o american muscle so good job
