I bought a used 2000 VW New Beetle GLX about 1.5 years ago. It had 44,000 miles on it when I got it. I had tons of dealers telling me that I didn't want a Beetle because they had problems. I haven't had the first thing go wrong with mine mechanically. The only negative thing I can say is that the power window switches are very weak and break easily. Other than that I am VERY VERY VERY happy with my car. I only wish I could have found a diesel. I think you would be happy with a Beetle as well.
I decided that the dealers were telling me the Beetles were crap so they could sell me a new car off their lot because they kept trying to steer me over to the new car section.

Some of the Beetles had problems early on, but they are generally not recurring problems. The bad part was eventually replaced with a new and improved part, and the problem shouldn't come back.
If you are looking at used TDI, I suggest asking when the timing belt was changed last, so you will know if that's maintenance you need to be worrying about any time soon. Also check relay 109... crap, I can't remember which color it should be. But there is an old one(bad juju) and a new one(good stuff). Most have been replaced with the new one by now, but ya never know. You can find more info about that at www.tdiclub.com, probably in the faq.
