whats up guys, i recently had 3.73s put in my 93 350 trans am, it defently pulls alot harder and has more take off by far!! but i got the gears from out of a older blazer, the whine all the time, and when i get up to about 50-60 they start to rumble but never had a problem, do u think the mechanic put them in wrong--- or that just because there used they will do that, the mechanic insists its becasue there used, says that hes done them before new and never had a problem?? do u think they will ever blow out?? any help would be appreciated--thanks guys

Mechanics often make the mistake of tightening the pinion nut with a impact wrench which sets too much preload and cause's the squeeling or whining as you mentioned. I bet if you loosened the pinion nut and and re-tighten it with a breaker bar and torque wrench the problem would go away but it also could be incorrect backlash/contact pattern. Good Luck and take care of this as quickly as possible cause it will only get worse.

The gear is already damaged, if it doesn't go in correct the first time, all that is left is scrap, unfortunately the same happened to me...an expensive lesson learned...

I have done ton's of gear install's and just cause its whining doesn't necessary mean he has damaged gears already just cause that was the case for you doesn't that is the case every time and if it is infact from too much preload its not the gears contacting incorrectly making the noise. As for not going incorrectly the first time also not the case. I know plenty of rears that had to be re-shimmed and works fine for many many miles after that but there could be damage which would be seen once it was opened up

check out www.thunderracing.com and i had something similar happen to me i heard it making a weird noise besides the wining and he re-shimmed it and it was fine for a while next thing i know... i have a huge clunking sound from the rear-end every time i let off the gas. Had it checked out and basicly the diff. was shot. It had play in it and they "didnt know why it happend" so its probably something similar...get it fixed right away. Or it will cost you big down the road......

Thanks for your confirmation. The fact is that if the gear is not shimmed correctly it will cause havoc on your diff and gears itself.I can only recommend to have that type of work done by a real pro, reputable business! Imagine how much power goes in there and if you apply the power to wrong setup you'll trash the pinion gears. I had three teeth brake right out of the gear. I would also never buy a used unit, waste of time and money.

in regards to the rumble, check before you do anything else if the driveshaft was installed correctly to the rear, check if the u joints are seated properly and tightened down correct, not lose.If you have play, you will get a rumble out of balance kind a feel.It becomes very noteable at certain speeds.
