Broken fuel gauge?

Hey guys,
I have a 1995 Honda Civic DX. After my tank hit the halfway mark at about 123 miles, I started questioning my fuel...stuff... After looking up my fuel tank capacity (11.90) and average MPG (35/40) I started thinking something was up.
I was actually really surprised to hear that my tank is 11.90 as the most I've ever put into it is probably about 8 gallons, even when the guage read empty. This has got me really stumped. Can I take it into a mechanic to look at it during my next oil change and tune-up?
Any help would be really appreciated guys. Thanks in advance!

It may be the floater off your fuel pump assembly needs to be adjusted.
