Well I've learned a valuabe lesson yesterday after getting of the phone with my mom. She called and told me that on several occassions people had rewritten the tips that I left for them via credit card. This takes the cake now. I honestly believe that there is hardly anyone in this world to be trusted now. Maybe these waiters/waitresses, would get a clue and realize that tips tend to reflect their waiting skills and personality. How fast and often they check to make sure everything at our table i going well. You better believe if you ask if I want change that the tip your getting is a BIG FAT NOTHING!

So if your a waiter/waitress and you've done this to people go fuck yourself. Have a nice day.

What a crock of shit. I hope you go to those resaurants and confront their managers (bring the receipts and your credit card statements, they don't lie)

I left a 10 cent tip at Famous Daves, and they're lucky they got that much from me.

10 cents... that's worse than leaving no tip

I walked out of a restaurant once without tipping, or paying anything at all for that matter. The service was shit and the food was completely mediocre. I was having a quick lunch with my gf and needed to get back to office. I asked for the bill not once, or twice, but three times. I waited for about ten minutes, it didnt come, so i just picked myself up, got my coat, and walked out. If they don't want to bring my bill, i won't fucking pay :)

I don't know, maybe its me, but I never leave a tip in the reciept or credit card bill. I always zero out the tip for their tax purposes. I give them the cash instead on the table or in their hands.

Yea you gotta really be carefull about that crap. I'm always wicked paranoid about that when I pay with a credit card. Usually all I do is just make it virtually impossible for them to change it. Put a dollar sign in so theres no room, put a decimal point, and a line after the last number. Works good. Peace-

My mom does the exact same thing. I do it too...but I'm not sure why.

lets say the bill was $13.27. You give them a $20, and they say "you want your change?"

They have to say if you want your change back. Tips aren't apart of the bill nor are they mandatory. They are given out as an appreciation for their services. The person was just doing their job. Next time try saing "keep the change"

I agree. I deliver pizza. If someone's bill is like 23.83 and they hand me 2 twenties. Pretty sure if i just walked away i would be gettin yelled at. It is part of their job to ask if you would like change. So i dont see why you would not give them a tip for doing their job. Isnt that the reason you DO tip?

not exactly. tips arent not apart of your bill or mandatory but, I know for a fact at IHOP all servers make a minimum 2.13 an hour (state requirement). So tipping is very much appreciated.(my sister and many friends have check stubs to prove it.) So if you don't tip...well you see. No it is mandatory, but when your food is cooked they dont have to bring it to you either. Nor fill your drinks, or even give a shit about if you are doing ok or if you'd like something else. Also there are so restuarants that don't require tipping but there food is alot higher also. Like pizza drivers here don't get paid gas for driving there car to your house. so it isn't fair to not tip them something. which is why some places have a sign that says "tipping appreciated" to make you feel guilty for not. you know who you are. some people try to be pricks and say "well they weren't any good or they didn't do enough." Since they did something for you, you should tip for them. You pay for your service. nothing is free.

as for the matter at hand, when you leave a tip they should give you another reciept with the tip added in. if not you can't prove anything.

the proper thing to do is hand the person all of their change back and if they want to give you tip they will do so. you don't ask for tips, they're given. asking "do you want your change" is like saying "hey, can i keep your money?", i see it as rude.

it is a reqiuremnet to ask that if you are waited on at a table/brought food. Not, if you pay at cash register. Put it this way, at least it is not already in your bill. and like i said(for the people that do) when your server brings you your ticket make sure that reprint you another ticket with the tip added in(if you paid with a credit card). Waiters and waitresses aren't slaves so way treat them like they are?

heh yeh i can personally vouch for the ihop thing. my roommate works there (he pays me our $270 rent in ones, ugh) and he's always bitching about that. he's a good server, so he makes enough, but his check for a 40 hour work week is like $70-110... for 40 hours. I don't care how much in tips you make, that's just friggin depressing.

As for the cc tip thing, I ALWAYS write in the total myself. I've suspected that's happened to me a few times but never could prove it... you know looking at your statement going "I KNOW all I got were hot wings, but I had no idea they were $18!"... so now I just write the total from the top, cuz you figure the tip into that... and then just sfcribble all over the tip blank.

What I mean has been said. I just think it's rude to ask if you want change. You should automatically, as being a professional in your job, bring back change no matter what. I find it very rude.

^No hard feelings cause i completely understand. that is why i dont wait tables. In ANY business that handles money..people tend to get very defensive about their money. like it is conspiracy to take your money. Nobody wants to take your money...you just don't want to spend it. face it everybody wants to get something for free. ;)

Rock on, I do to.

Sometimes, the bill would be like, 22.95, and they had me a 20, and 5 and just take their pizza's and walk inside. I rarely get "keep the change", they just...walk away... Which I ain't complainin' about.

On ONE instance, I've had a memory lock and I haven't been able to calculate the appropriate change, the order was for 25 bucks (not even), and the change was like 25 bucks, as she was paying with a 50 (makes sence?) I had the change, I came prepared, but she said "just make it 20", 5 dollar tip, awesome, that's petrol for the entire shift, but I accidently gave her the 5, and not the 20, thinking that's what she wanted, I don't know why, I didn't realise it till 3 hours later at the end of my shift, I had over 20 bucks extra, and I couldn't figure out WHERE it came from, I went home, and couldn't stop thinking about it, I had done 7 delivery's that night, so I figured, "man, people are fucking generous tonight".

I ended up spending the entire amount and putting it into my tank (I put exactly 20 bucks in).

3 weeks later, it dawned on me "could I have accidentally mis-changed that person?" I'm convinced I did.

lol yeah i saw resivoir dogs, great movie and mr pink with his whole tipping thing. I have to agree with some of you guys tho i mean if the waiter dosent like come and ask me how my dinner is and if eevrything is ok im kinda like wtf cause i kinda enjoy sombody asking me how stuff is it just feels good, if your some stone cold bitch who just ignores u and u have to ask numerous times for stuff then go f yerself with a fork in the backroomBut i do feel bad for some waiters because they have to put up with bitchy customers crap and other things.

I agree in SOME instances. Like if their change would only be like 2-3 bucks i ask if they would like any change. But if its 5 or more bucks they would get back i usually just straight up say how much would you like back. I never assume that im going to a tip. Some people might want that 2-3 bucks back who knows. I dont think that if im delivering pizza and someone should get 5 dollars change that i should give them the 5 bucks and then they tip me. I see that as a total waste of time.

how is that possible? minimum wage here is $7.05 an hour.

drewh4386
03-08-2005, 01:01 AM
for tax purposes waiters/waitresses make 2.13 an hour because of tips. at first it was not reported as income but know it is. think if i make 7.05*40 hrs=282......now add $40(average) in tips *5 and you get $200

now add 282+200 and you get 482 for one week. which is 12.05 an hour....that is not minimum wage.

So since you can only be taxed for what you earn...think of all the money that goes untaxed. that is like evading taxes or cheating on tax breaks.

now like i said i have the check stubs to prove it.

drewh4386
03-08-2005, 01:11 AM
i also like too add that waiters/waitress have to report their tips at the end of their shift because a portion of it goes back to the resturant. the more tips you make the less your check will be because of tax purposes. (you don't want to owe the gov. money) which is why there is the $70-110 gap. $70 and less for a high week of tips and vise verse. so tipping is very much appreciated.

I've waited tables before. If there was a time when I wasnt helping someone, its because I was stressed out from so much bullshit from the job, and I didnt have time to do everything that needed to be done right away. Waiting tables can be very hard on a busy night. When you have 20 people to take care of, and then one of them asks you to for some bleu cheese olives, you need to fit in 5 minutes of olive stuffing fast enough to make him happy, but you cant ignore everyone for 5 minutes. Then you got the guy who needs a refill every time you see him, and a different sauce every other time you see him, and his kids are twice as bad, Then you have the old lady table where they tell you to come over, then they ignore you for the first 10 seconds you are standing there, then they all stop and give you a blank stare, and you have to play 20 questions with them to figure out what they wanted, and the other table just flagged you because they need you to get their plates and order dessert, and by the way, your other table's drinks are finished at the bar, but you've got 15 minutes worth of other crap to do already, and oh guess what, you just got sat, one more table of 4, make sure you greet them and get their drink orders within the next 2 minutes.

God I hated serving. Im glad Im getting certified for car stuff.

The amount I tip is dictated by the service I receive. This applies not only to resturants, but my mechanic gets "tips" as well. If someone bends over backwards for me, then I tip them generously. My wife and another couple go for pizza every Friday night and the waitress there enjoys seeing us, jokes with us, puts up with all my joking and gets a 35% tip total for the night. And some nights when it is really busy, we get up and get our own drinks (pop & coffee !!, they don't serve booze).
But we get our pizza within 15 minutees of parking the car while others wait 1 1/2 to 2 hrs. just for pick-up and delivery.
