93 Jetta starting problem

I have a 93 Jetta with an automatic trans and a 2.0l. It was running and stopped. It cranks over fine and fires once or twice the frist time you try. If you let it sit it will fire one or twice again. There is fuel up to the fuel pressure regulator. If you use starting fluid it fires and runs.
I did not check to see if the is pressure on the fuel rail, read that here latter. What more should I look at or is it the regulator?

Thanks

Do you hear the fuel pump run for a couple of seconds when you turn the key to on position. Try jumping the fuel pump relay to make the pump run all the time. Remember there are two pumps, one in the tank & one by the RR tire. If either one dies it can caue problems.

Yes you hear it on for about 5sec with the key turned and you have good floe to the feul pressure regulator.

You should have a test port plug on the end of the fuel rail. It only requires a simple gauge to test. 36-44 psi w/pump running.

I had 45 psi with the pump running, also had what seemed like a good injector firing with light. Very slow turning over.

Slow from discharged battery or from incorrect ignition timing?
