hello,
when painting panel lines, what sort of methods do you use? i am trying to make my panel lines stand out on my current supra but i do not really know how to :loser:
does anyone have a easy method that i can do? or should i stick with the efficient el-cheapo method of using a toothpick
thanks in advance

Hey,
Usually, I use flat black paint, thinned. Use a tiny brush to avoid overage. Brush into the panel line. Wipe excess off. Hope it helps.

buy a Pigma Micron marker, fit in panel lines perfect.

The most realistic I've seen take the body color and darken it with some black paint...looks a little better then just black.

I like using Pigma Micron .005 black pens for making panel lines. They're basically a disposable technical pen, I've seen them in most art supply stores and Hobby Lobby/Micheal's. I like to apply the panel lines on an intermediate coat of paint...apply a few color coats, let dry, apply the panel lines w/the Pigma Micron pen, let dry, and apply a few more light color coats. This way the panel lines are ultra-clean, and a darker shade of the color. It's also quite easy to do-less messy than using paint, although the tutorial on italianhorses.net is my second-favorite method of applying panel lines.

An assortment of pigment liners/disposable technical pens that can be used to detail models as well.

.005 is the smallest shown, also shown is .01 and .02

This picture is huge, the line looks a bit ragged, but you don't see that on the model which is much smaller than the picture.

Never use black. Use the color of the car and darken it just a bit. I find black panel lines ruin the look of a nice build. You are just creating the shadow and if you look close you will see it is just the color of the car only darker. Just my :2cents:

Gundam marker pens
Gundam Marker are the easiest way.

Tell me black isn't nice (my current project)

I agree on White, Yellow, Lime Green and other "light" color, it look bad. But in most case, it make the job done !

I also, ummm... "borrowed" the under-the-paint idea from you Bob. ;) Works even better.

I am saying IMHO black is much too stark. I am not saying your current project is wrong. When I look at pictures of the real car the line is just a shadow and sometimes is not visible at all. I do not see any black lines in this picture for example.http://www47.tok2.com/home/bakusou/photo/112-1224_IMG1.jpg
But I have looked at pictures of this car after a race and the panel lines are very dark but are not black.

You are right. It's not 100% realistic, but you can get a good look out of a gundam marker (this is my point)

hmmm. id try the darken the body color of the paint but the castrol toms supra is white and if i darkened it, the panel lines would look grey. maybe ill try using a black marker pen or something.

I like black panel lines no metter what :D
But then again I work with rally cars only and it is a little different story then the regular, one colour cars. I don't like black panel lines only on yellow cars, but I love them on white ones.
This is my Corolla with nice black ones done by simple thined MM enemal SG black.

The Gundam Markers (Fine Line) are absolutely the best I got for this job... I have a grey marker for lighter colors and a black marker for darker colors. On this red I have used the grey marker with great results.

Was in town today - didn't get what I wanted but did walk past a games workshop. Brought some black ink. Added a drop or two of water to a drop of ink, and painted the panel lines. Any that went over the panel line, I just wiped off. It dried, I used a SMALL amount of arcylic thinner with a q-tip to wipe it off.
Job done..!! Although, it didn't make a DARK black line, more like a shadow line, but it did it. Gundam Markers are more sharp, and darker. I kinda like the line the ink I brought gave me, wasn't over powered. Looked OK.

He never said you couldn't. All he said was don't use black, he didn't say don't use a black Gundam marker ;)
IMHO black panel lines make the models look like toys.

I have been really LOOKING at cars I pass on the highway, and no matter what the color or the sunshine index, all the panel lines seem to be pretty dark, basically black. I suppose a really dark grey cut with some body color would be the best.

Most realistic method I've found for panel lines is not to paint them at all. Rather scribe them down deep, so you get more shadows in the gap. No need for paint/marker/ink/whatever. Not recommended for everybody however, as it takes much practice and time to get it right. Without due care it's an easy way to screw things up.

Soo True, I have to get some materials to scribe them:( I normally paint them with Tamiya XF-1 Flat Black Acrylic. BUT, I think its best to scribe them down so that, as Phil mentioned, the shadows fill in the panel lines:)
