One problem I've seen before is that the air is diverted to the defrost vents no matter what direction is indicated by the ECC head. This is usually a disconnected or broken vacuum line commonly at the vacuum reservoir. Your problem seems to be the opposite. That leads me to think that you have a stuck vacuum valve.
I'm not sure what year we're talking about here and assume that you have the Electronic Climate Control since it's an SSE. The diagram for my 93 is somewhat confusing but check the defrost/AC valve vacuum actuator by tracing the blue vacuum line from the HVAC programmer. This appears to control the air flow to the windshield. The actuator should be able to be moved in and out be hand. Check for proper movement.
Is your temp display on the ECC head blinking for a couple of minutes upon start-up? If so, I'd suspect an air mix door actuator. Again, I need to know what year you have to determine is you have on-board climate control diagnostics. If it doesn't blink it could be a few other things.

vehicle is 1990 w/digital control---I pulled the module out and only found a clip that plugs into the back with four wires. Could not find any vacuum lines. Also where is the vacuum canister located? Thanks for your help.

The vacuum reservoir is located under the hood between the master cylinder and blower motor. It's the black plastic "box". Again, this is an area of concern but the problem could be further down the system. Here's a pic I used for another topic:

The vacuum lines for the actuators start at the HVAC programmer and end at their respective actuators. They are not connected to the ECC head. Drop the hush panel above the passenger's side footwell and you should see the ECM and HVAC programmer to the left of the fuse box (SSE equipped). The ECM is a silver box and the HVAC programmer resembles a box with a missing side panel. You should see a round vacuum connector with several different colored lines. I'm going to have to verify the color of that specific line. I was referencing my 93 manual when I gave you the earlier detail.
Is your display blinking (ext temp I believe it is in the 90) when you start the car???

thanks for the help. i will take a look and give that a try tomorrow. i will let you know how that goes. Also, i may try cleaning out the evaporator core or whatever that was. Once again, thanks for the help, and while we are talking about this model, could you check out my other post and see if you could help me out with that? i would appreciate it, and thanks again for the help.
