this happened about a year ago....
i was walking to my car from the school. i got in, started it up and put it in reverse. for some stupid reason i had decided to floor it. the engine reved up to about 5 grand and before i knew what was going on the reverse clutch engages and i do a sick ass 2 wheel peelout. so then i'm amazed at the 10 foot tire marks and say "the fu__ was that!". then i start to drive home. on the way out of the parking lot i started to hear a loud clicking noise coming from under the car between the front wheels. "sh__" i say and stop the car to check it out. i thought that a u-joint on one of the half-shafts was damaged. i get out and wiggle the halfshafts and they seemed fine. then i drive home with the loud clicking noise. people on the sidewalk starred at me it was so loud. i get home and tell my dad. we both agree that the half shaft needed to be replaced. we replace them and the clicking noise resumes, and not only that, but the trans seemed to slip. i parked it in the driveway and it rolled when it was in park. at this point we knew it was the trans. we send it to a trans shop and they found out and showed us this-
-the gear teeth on the differential case were stripped off!
-the reverse clutch was shredded to hell
-the trans case was CRACKED!
the shop dude said he had never seen anything like that(i was kind of proud:D) so we had to replace the whole trans for $2,000.
the deal with the old trans-
-8 nueteral drops from 6k, 2 in reverse(i know, i know)
-98k with no fluid change(trans fluid was black and smelled burnt-this was prior to the nueteral drops)
-no trans work-crappy valve body
i know it was stupid of me to nuetral drop and i have leared not to do it again:). so theres the story. i'm suprised the tranny even held up that long.

congratulations... you've been initiated.
oh and your tranny lasted longer than 75% of the zx2's in the US... so be proud.

I knew a guy who loved to neutral drop. But it tears the F*** out of A/T's. Morale of the story: Sticks are much better sutied for peeling out (the worst that can happen is you ruin the clutch.)

Any trans/diff that you can wreck by lighting the tires up needs to be redesigned. That is really sad. I remember when I was a stupid kid doing nuetral drops and shit, I'd sometimes get pissed off at something or someone and hold the gas to the floor and shift back and forth from drive the reverse, over and over without ever letting the gas pedal off the floor, trying to break something, and all I ever succeeded in doing was breaking motor/trans mounts and floating lifters. Cars used to be built like tanks, though. The ones I grew up on could take some abuse. I remenber when you could sit on your hood without caving it in, too. Hell, I can't even lean against a car anymore without denting it. :nono:

unless its race built or in a very high end car (cobra, vette, SS, WS6 ect) every tranny will drop from continual burnouts

Yes, even the Vettes and Impala SS (which share the same tranny) usually the tranny gets lunched at about 75,000 miles. After looking at them both used and finally buying the SS, I realized this. They either had just had a tranny replaced, if they had over 75K, or the tranny seemed a little "iffy", which was why I think you see alot of them being sold right around that mileage. They don't wanna pay to get it done, but know it's coming.
I spent $1600 having mine redone and improved, with a performance kit, additional clutch packs (there is provision for more to strengthen it) and complete pressure and integrity testing of all the important parts. It was done by a well-respected Chevy performance shop. The builder said it would handle 500hp with ease now. He said with the 275 or so I have behind it, it'll never go bad. So I guess the diff will blow next

They come with a real strong diff (posi), but there's always room for improvement. I have a friend that runs a 4-door '79 Buick Electra 225 that has run 12.98 sec 1/4 at the Buick nationals. He has a 455 B+B, with the stage 2 "Hemi Killer" Buick performance cam, the tranny is a drag-prepped TH700R4 with switch-pitch torque convertor, and the posi diff I took outta a '78 Pontiac Safari wagon, then dropped it off at Matt Johnson's for a $900 makeover. On the way back from Tennesee, we got in a race with an old Plymouth GTX. When Jim trounced it to the floor to downshift and put this guy away, it lunged so hard the driveshaft tube shredded, twisted over on itself in the center and snapped in two. The front half ripped through the floorboard, as it wasn't restrained by the safety loop. Very exciting!!
He found his weak point. He now runs a composite shaft, carbon fiber and Kevlar or something, very pricey. :naughty: There's always something that isn't as strong as the rest. We haven't found out what the next thing is gonna be yet.
But, if you ever come to St Louis and find yourself sitting at a light with a white 4-door Buick land yacht with 3" duals poking out under the bumper......better leave it alone
