2000 Rodeo Help? Left Me Walking

when i cranked our 2000 Rodeo today, it ran fine. By the time I backed it out of the drive, it was sputtering and shut off. I checked around under the hood, and all looked fine. When i started it back up, it sputtered a second and acted fine, pickup was perfect, motor revved up good. We pulled out of the driveway and drove about 3/4 mile and it began to sputter again, when i pressed the gas it acted like it had no power and shut off. I restarted it and it would start but sputter and choke, something like very small amount of backfiring. We pulled it home and replaced the fuel filter. I listened to the pump, and i thought i could hear it prime up when the key is switched on, so i thought it was okay. Now what i get is turnover but doesnt sound like it is firing at all. It wont even sputter and crank. Any ideas? are there any relays that need to be replaced that may cause this? Thanks for any help.

Just to be positive you are getting fuel, do you smell gasoline (like it's flooding) when the engine is turning over? How many miles on the truck? Are you getting a check engine light? This could be an electrical issue, a bad crank or cam position sensor, or a valve timing issue (T-belt jumped a few teeth). I'd start by scanning for codes. Do you have any warranty left?

OK, I pulled the hose off the fuel filter and I am not getting gas to the filter. But according to my repair manual, I am hearing a short hum when the key is switched on, which sounds like the pump, but not gas is going to the filter. It is as dry as it was when i first put in on earlier. I swapped my heater relay with my fuel pump relay and the results are the same, so I guess that it is not the relay. Any other things to check? How can you read the codes? doesnt that take a computer or something? I have about 66000 miles on the truck. There is not fuel smell and the check engine light is not on. Looks like i'm not getting fuel, what else do i need to eliminate before pulling the tank and replacing the pump? My gas gauge has not been working since October, which is just the fuel sending unit. I have been restoring another car, and just kept the car full and figured my mileage. I know there is gas in the tank so that is not the answer either. I put a couple of gallons in to make sure, cause i wasnt going to be made to look the fool on that one. Thanks for any help!
