All 22R engines are compatiable. If up grading to a electronic controlled engine, you would have to install the ECU and wiring harness. I believe from 84 to 88 the body panels are the same.

all body parts or the same from 84 to 88 in late 85 they changed the suspention from solid axel to ifs.The 22r engines are pretty much unchanged and should interchange. A good site with alot of info is www.toyotanation.com

Accually there are differences in the 22r engines. Here is a quote from a manual "NOTE : EARLY 81 - 84 22R - RE AND LATE 85 - 95 22R / RE ENGINE BLOCKS / CYLINDER HEADS DO NOT INTERCHANGE WITH-OUT CONSIDERABLE MODIFICATIONS"
Hope that helps

Celicas used 22R engines.

the truck was actually widened by 3" when they went to IFS in 86. the rear axle is wider.

Well not all 22r Motors are....
The 1981-1984 Motors are different the the 1984-1994 22r(e)
You have a 22r a 22re and a 22RET
The ret is a Turbo motor I beleave was in the 1987 Toyota truck.

Even though the 1981-1984 Motor is differnt IT would still work. Keep in mind there is reason for changing the motor.
The heads are diffent sizes so if you pick a 1981-1984 motor good luck finding parts... All you need is a long block from a 1985-1995 - the intake you can add your intake to any 1985-1995 motor. If you have any more (Q's) please fell free to email me and I would be more then happy to help..

One aditional note:
For high performance applications, you can install a 20R cyl head on a 22R Engine to boost compression.
