Well tell me if a take the cake, but i burned out the cluthch packs on a 90 700r4 with only 87,000 miles on the other day. I didnt think i drove it that hard but i quess i did. Does anyone know the average goin rate for a rebuild job or the price of a desently used 700r4 for a 3.1 v-6 would be? I cant help but laugh and be pissed at this one. Well the fact that the car has twin turbo's and i do love to gun the hell out of it might have someting to do with it, but i thought 700r4's were like really tough. oh well, you guys have fun posting your thoughts about this and the prices i need and ill respond really soon. (sense i dont have my baby to drive this weekend ill be a nerd and sit in front of the computer screen)

I am very sorry to hear about that Jess, unfortantly 700r4 are usually tough but you can get one that doesn't last as long as the average and you got that one. Check out www.car-parts.com (http://www.car-parts.com/) and ebay. Hopefully you can pick up a replacement cheap. Good Luck.

let me get you guys opinion. My tranny that i thing blow up might not have. I have now gone to 4 mechanics and had them diagnose the problem, two seperate mechanics today told me that they thought it might be a linkage issue or an electronic issue, so here's what its doing. when i accelerate it shifts from 1st gear to 2nd fine when it should shif tinto 3rd it slips, there is no power and the car actually start to decellerate b ut the rpms go throught the roof. 1st, 2nd and reverse all work fine its jsut 3rd and 4 the that dont seem to be there. if i gunn it really hard when it should be in thrid at like 5500 rpms it seems like the car is beginning to get power back. 2 mechanics told me that it was the clutch packs and i need a complete rebuild (ones price was 800 and the orthers price 1100) and the other two couldnt tell me how much it would cost untill they pulled the pan and looked at the inereds of the tranny and could really start trouble shoioting the issue. i dont want to spend 800 dollars on a coplete rebuild if i dont have to but i also dont want to spend 200 or 300 or maybe more dollars to have them trya nd fix the problem and it need a rebuild. Any of you guys' and the few girls that come here's advise would be greatly appriciated. ohh and th the guy that said he didnt believe that the car has twin turbos cant tell him much, i bought to car as is and dont know what kind of internal mods were made and the turbo's look pretty old and i dont much about turbo's or superchargers, but i will get some pics up in the next couple of weeks when my brother come back from college and brings his digital camera. please any ideas about my tranny would be appriciated greatly.

Sounds exactly like what happened to a 700r4 tranny I had in an 87 2.8 firebird once. It would shift from first to second just fine, but when it tried to shift to third, it would just rev and wouldn't pull. If I hammered the accelerator it would downshift to second again just fine. I had it rebuilt and it done the same thing three weeks later if I remember correctly. I took it back and they said it was a broken sprague (don't know the first thing about trannys so maybe someone with experience in the field could elaborate). At the time I had that tranny rebuilt, it was around $750.00 in Alabama around 1996. Know a guy who's having a 700r4 built for a grand prix now and I think he said it was gonna be around $1100.00 by a reputable shop in Tennessee. Hope this helps, and if you find out what went wrong, let us know.

About $1500 to rebuild and about the same for a GOOD replacement (TCI or B&M).

you can probably find a rebuilt 700r4 on ebay for 500-600. I know you can get a th350 for only 300.

Yeah if you're going to start dumping money into this transmission just have a complete rebuild done and be finished with it. It will probably save you money in the long run and you can just get it over and done with.

in the long run i will have more money than i have now. This is the off season for my work, so money is kinda tight. If i can fix it and have it run good for the next 6 months than i will beable to afford to buy a new tranny outright. but right now i dont have a lot to work with so if i can just get a small repair done to get me by for like 6 months or so then i wont have to worry about the long run.

i blew mine in a short 3 months after i switched my motors in my caprice, as soon as they get any hp in front of them they crumble thats why i grabbed a th350 for 250$ that was rebuilt, with nasty clutches, shift kit and aluminum deep quart pan, helluva deal.

Its sounds like slipage to me and that means time for a rebuild. If ur RPM's shoot up between the shift then thats a slip, sounds like ur 3-4 clutch packs are worn out and u need a rebuild.
