hello all i could use a skilled ford tech right about now. preferably, a tech with a better wiring diagram the the haynes manual. i have a 0.400 amp current draw on the battery. the drain is comming from fuse 23 of the i/p fuse block under the drivers dash. according to the owners manual, this fuse is labeled GEM, RAP, & PATS. i think the problem is the GEM control module which allows the interior excessories to stay powered up for 45 seconds after the ignition is turned off. i have no wiring diagram to show me what the fuse 23 is controlling. the haynes manual doesnt have this fuse 23 listed in the power window wiring diagram. if there is a ford tech out there that can email me a better wiring diagram and tell me where this GEM (generic electronic module) contol unit is located in the vehicle, i would be more than thankfull.
thanks

The GEM on a Taurus stays on for 45 minutes or a little longer. It should drop from .400a to around .180a then sit there for a long time until it finally drops below .055a. Give it time to work then ask again.

according to the manual it is only supposed to be on for 45 seconds not minutes. i was working on the car for about an hour to see if it would drop and it didnt. i pulled fuse 23 and it went down to 0.054amp drain, which is what i am looking for. where is the GEM located?

no wiring diagram. just a picture of the part and its component location.

see if this helps you. There is a lot more diagrams, but this one has fuse 23 on it. You may want to unplug the RAPS and PATS module separately to see if it drops.

If you can print these out, let me know so I can take them out of my page. They eat up my room. Thanks.

i have a problem. i bought a replacement gem module. i installed it and the car doesnt even crank over anymore. no check engine light. my question to you is do i have to have the alarm and ecm programmed to the different gem module? it is having the same characteristics as when i had a lock smith come over and program the keys to the ignition. help me out.

I believe the PATS ans RAP module feed through the GEM also. Like I stated, there are many pages of diagrams for this system. There is a great possibility the GEM does not read the PATS module and will not recognize the key. Let me look at diagram. Both the other modules are tied into the GEM. So with a different GEM module, you amy need to re program it to the PATS and RAP modules.

You nalready have the PATS diagram. Good luck.

thanks for your help.

We could have told you that a locksmith wasn't going to help you.
And I would bet this ain't gonna be cheap. They typically charge $50 or $75 to program a key if you have fewer than two keys. And you're talking about programming the module itself--good luck.

You posted at 8:30 PM and he had come and gone by 10 AM the next morning. Not exactly a lot of warning period there.
You told the locksmith that he needed to reprogram the module and he wasn't aware already that he can't do that?

alright here is an update. all attempts have failed. i replaced the gem module and the battery saver realy continues to stay powered up with is continuing to power up the accessory relay. here is my next question as i am not familiar with ford electrical systems. what does the power saver realy do? what is the gem module looking at that tells it to power up the battery saver relay? if anyone has a detailed explaination and wiring diagrams for the gem, pats, & rap module that would be most appreciated.
thanks

Have you tried swapping this relay with another similar one from your fuse box? It is possible the relay is just hanging up. If so that's maybe $10 at the dealer.
You can infer, to some extent, what kinds of things the GEM is looking at to determine when to power/unpower the relay by opening/closing doors, turning the key in the ignition, etc.
I think power saver relay is just another way to say battery saver relay.

yes i did swap the realy. i ohmed out the relay and it is working correctly. once you pull fuse 23 the relay clicks off. there has to be another part/control unit telling the gem module to keep the battery saver relay powered up. does anyone have a wiring diagram of the gem, pats, & rap modules?

i have a 2001 with the exact problem. i can also pull fuse 16 and get the same results. the delay relay clicks when i unplug fuse 23 or 16. i dont want to spend the money on the gem if that is going to fix the problem so i was thinking of pulling the fuse and putting it on acc from the key switch. atleast that way i wont have to keep unplugging the gem. the only problem i find with that is that the keyless entry wont work without power to the gem.oh and i am on my second new battery. gotta keep digging. happy hunting lets keep in touch, seems like we have the same problem.

Welcome to the forum!
Just so you know, Busa4 hasn't had any activity on this forum for over a year so don't necessarily expect a reply from them soon regarding what they found.
I'll try to remember to take a look at the 2001 service manual to see what kinds of things might keep the GEM module active.
By chance, does your "Door Ajar" light stay on or come on randomly? Have you read about the common door switch issues?

yeah it used to stay on alot but it hasnt been doing it for awhile now and the interia light isnt staying on, but i will double check it again. and i will read up somemore about the door swithch. the funny thing is that it has been awhile since i remember it staying on but i didnt have any battery trouble back then. i also found it wierd that i can pull two different fuses (23 or 16) and the delay relay will drop out.

I have a 2001 Taurus Wagon with battery drain issue.
Where EXACTLY is the Power Saver Relay? If in fusebox, what positon #?
Wiring could be different, but here goes:
inside fusebox:
#16 - Flasher and GEM power, Integrated Control Panel Power, RCC Memory, Cluster
#23 - Air Bag, PATS Transceiver
Thanks

The Battery Saver Relay is in the Central Junction Box (CJB). According to the factory service manual, the relay however is soldered directly to the board internal to the CJB.
