2001 tracker 4x4 4wd issues

buddy of mine has some issues with his tracker 4x4. says his light says that the 4wd is engaged but when he has it in 4wd, it actually drives worse than 2wd. the front axles arent engaging even though the light displays that it is. just curious if anyone has a similar issue or maybe an idea of what it could be?

Our 2000 Tracker does the same thing. Seems the 4x4 light comes on even if the front end isn't engaged. The light switch must not be well aligned. We've learned to really push the 4x4 shift lever forward to get full engagement, and not rely on the light only.
