cd player problem subs wont work

i just got kenwwod cd player in my car yesterday i hooked up my subs and my amp i plugged the RCA cables into the cd player and my subs only kick in when i play the radio not a cd i also have a set of rca cables that are directly in the back of the cd player any body got any suggestions as to what is wrong opinions are welcome
