I think this might be a hot car. It will be postioned between the Boxster S and 911. Heres a link to a site about it:

http://www.carpages.co.uk/porsche/porsche-cayman-s-24-02-05.asp?switched=on&echo=70691294

THere are no pictures, but there are more hits in the "Web" search on Google.

I personally think this might the real so called "Boxster Coupe". So I guess we'll have wait and see...

It sounds cool, but if it had as much power as the new 911, it would make it a little odd to keep the 911 (other than the prestige of the 911).

The 911 will be dead within 10yrs. Or Porsche will end up making a few token 911's each year to satisfy the 911 loyalists. The cayman S owns the 911.

The Cayman S wont have as much power as the 911. Porsche is not stupid enough to canibalize its best car. It will be right in the middle of the Boster and 911 (price and performance). So the 911 will still be the flagship Porsche. If they killed the 911, all purists would be in an uproar.

I can't help but think that the Cayman is what the 911 should have been: mid-engined.

Will the Cayman have the RMS engines of the current 911?

Also,

Will the Cayman make the 911 obsolete?

That's a good question. The Cayman will have either a detuned 911 engine, or a higher-output Boxster engine (I can't remeber). But since it is much lighter than the 911 (or will be), It may, indeed, be faster overall. But the 911 is Porsche's halo car and no sane executive at Porsche would axe the 911. The 911 has a following of Porsche loylaists who wouldn't even dream about getting a Cayman over a 911 for normal driving purposes. The Cayman, however, may be more popular to gut out and use for track racing. The weight difference is enought to make a chang in acceleration, braking, top speed, etc. But the 911 will remain as a "gentleman's coupe" so to say, whereas the Cayman will be aimed at the younger Porsche customer.

All in all, the Cayman and 911 won't be close enough to cannibalize 911 sales. It may be lighter than the Boxster (no floding roof and extra mechanical stuff to add weight), so think of it as a lighter, more expensive Boxster. Or as a lighter, less expensive 911 but without the image. Porsche is not dumb. They are making this car carfully. The target is price and performance to slot evenly between the Boxster and 911, without being biased to one or the other. It could be a tricky position to fill correctly.

"The Cayman, built by coachbuilder Valmet of Finland, went on sale in Europe last month and debuts in the United States on Jan. 14."

There is a Cayman S at the local dealership, it was all covered but they showed it to me. It is just like the boxter but rommier inside. The engine is at the hight of your shoulders, and the trunk is pretty shallow, doesn't go down deep. The guy who showed it to me said he already drove it it is nice as hell, but he would not trade his 993 C4 for it. So i guess 911 fans will keep their 911s.
And whoever said that 911 will be obsolete, sorry but i have to call you a fucktard. 1st of all, only 3% of 911 owners said they will get a cayman instead of their carrera. 2nd- Cayman S never beat the Carrera on the track, yeah there is bs going around about that, but it was NEVER proven, no official numbers.
You think there are a bunch of retards working at Porsche? They know what they are doing, the cayman is there to compete with lower priced sports cars. There is no way in the world the 911 will Ever disappear or become unpopular, as it is THE Porsche. It carries the orginal Porsche shape, engine type and location, and symbolizes THE Porsche.
It will never disappear.

I should have asked if the Cayman S will make the 911's rear-engine design obsolete.

The Cayman S has better engineering (mid vs rear engine), better weight distribution, weighs over 150 pounds less, and has a "new" image (911 owners don't have the best of images in the UK). The 911 should have become a mid-engine design in the 1980s.

But it will not be the 911, if the carrera ever became MR, in the eyes of many Enthusiasts that would be the end of the Porsche.
That is the unique-ness (new word lol) of most porsches, the RR layout, no other car that I know of is like that. Yes maybe it is not the best in weight distribution, but to me it does not matter, the Porsche was originally designed like that and I would personally cry if 911 is ever discountinued.

I think this is like the the phase that Porsche had in the early 80's to the early 90's. There were a lot of FR cars with rear mounted tranny. A lot of people though that Porsche will discontinue the 911, but it never happened. And never will.
There are too many RR Porsche enthusiasts in this world and they will never let the evolution of the RR 911 stop.

I really like the new Cayman and Cayman S. They have very impressive body styles. I think they should eventually beef up the engine and offer a Turbo option....but i guess thats not the point its to make a mid-grade Porsche sportscar that is better than the boxster and little less than the 911.
