how many cylinders is that? in my school we have a dyno room, and for diesel engines lab we would dyno a catapiller engine thats a 13 liter straight 6. the engines redline is 1800 but on the dyno it made 990lb ft of tq before the water started to heat up and can't hold the load.
so for a 27 liter if its a straight 6 making 340 lb ft of tq per cylinder will only be making 2X the tq of the engine from my school.

the engine you guys would dyno is a 3406... or a C18. We have ones that are six cylinder that make just as much power as that 12 cylinder.
We have versions of that 12 cylinder that make 4k HP and 16K+ ft-lbs of torque at 2k something RPM

Wow 16K lb/ft thats amazing. Theres something about diesel engines that makes me happy it probably has something to do with insane boost levels. The funny thing is though is that I like efficiency like high hp 4 cylinders but the diesel is not efficient at all.
I guess once my brother got his Duramax, and got it up to 350whp and 650 lb/ft with just a chip, intake, and exhaust that peaked my interest. 14.2 in the quarter for 6500lb+ crew crab truck is a spectacle, and fun to do donuts and burnouts in as youngvr4 would attest.

The Diesel isn't efficient??? The hell? Diesels are uber efficient...
Dodge Ram 2500 Crewcab with a Cummins 600, 325hp 610ft-lbs can get upwards of 20-21mpg on the highway. It's a 6100lb truck. That's damn efficient. And a 3500 w/ 6 speed and single wheel axel can tow 15,000 rated lbs, but more accurately closer to 18,000-20,000lbs.
Mercedes Benz E300 turbodiesel sedans, like my buddies moms seriously gets 26 mpg city / 34 mpg highway in a 3600lb car. The thing is a tank. It moves out too for a beast, cruises all day at 85mph with ease. It'll pull to 120mph easy.
The Volkswagen Jetta TDI gets 42 mpg city / 49 mpg highway. That's not even a Hybrid.
And... Diesel fuel is generally cheaper than gas. And you use less of it... thus you don't fill up as often. Diesels are awesome.
I hope I read your comments wrong. :eek7:

ditto. Im fully aware of their fuel efficiency 20mpg+ for the duramax as well (cheap is no longer associated with the word diesel as of now though, its $2.70 a gallon for premium diesel in WA compared to $2.30 for premium gas)
A turbocharged for a 6.6? liter however @ 30 psi 350hp/500hp+ with better injectors and propane is nothing. A gas engine with that much boost (if it could handle it) would push 1,000+hp, and similiar torque.
Sorry about the misleading comment I thought when I said high hp four cylinders it would give the power vide and not the mpg vibe :uhoh: To clear up any further misconceptions of my post I realise how much more reliable diesels are as well with that much hp, and Im aware of the high torque as well, and how easy it is to extract that power. I hold to my statement however that diesel engines do not pull the same energy out of diesel as a gas engine does with gas.

Except the big thing isn't horsepower when it comes to diesels. It's torque, and you can get so much more torque from a diesel engine than you can a regular gasoline engine.

ok first of all that enigne runs at 15 PSI.. But don't let that fool you, boost is relative to airflow. the more air you flow, the less boost you have to run. 15 PSI on that engine is comparable to like 140 PSI on my turbo Buick.
Deisels are efficent as hell.... It makes all the power under 3k RPM...
Did anyone see that CAT has a diesel enigne in the LaMans races? Same power outputs, WAY better fuel econmy
Moppie, I was not doing repair work to it, I work at Caterpillers Proving Grounds in Peoria IL, I was doing some machine updates that unforunatly are confidential ( I know it sounds corny but hey, it's my job)

Actually diesel here is more than premium. I got one car drinking premium and one sipping diesel. My mercedes is pretty much unsafe to drive on the highway. It had NO merging power at all. Not to mention it feels like ass going 60mph. But oh well. It's got 230,000 miles on it and still starts up everytime. Minus conking out on cold starts. But that's another story.

83 300 Turbo diesel. One day I might rip that car apart and see if I can cram a 302 or something in there. That'd be a sleeper.
Edit: In which case I also wonder if I could fit a ford 9" outback. Damn..I'm gonna have to go examine that car later. This sounds like it could be fun. I'd need the motor/tranny/suspension/rearend/wheels/tires/gas tank/fuel lines/wire harness/brakes/etc.

It would even better to just own an LS1 without the mercedes though. I would think after that all the money spent on cramming an LS1 in that merc, including some fabrication, mounts, and shifting things around to fit it, you would be better off just getting an LS1 instead. MHO that is. But then again, there have been some to cram a GT stang motor in a Miata. I guess it would be worth it then. L8...

Diesels are incredibly effecient, and offer oodles of torque...but their powerband is so small relative to a nice size gasoline engine.
the dyno for diesels are just rollercoasters. I saw a track review of a Jaguar S-type diesel and the driver bitched constantly about how it gets great power right at the redline, but then hes forced to shift and the next gear takes him right out of the sweet spot
