With a Nice start on looks, its time for engine. I have set some goals and spent some hours searching so plz help me find my way.... I want to get the car to 13's eventually I think this will need 400hp ?? 4600 #'s

92 caprice wagon 305 tbi (engine code e) thinking a swap to 350 tbi (7?)

My 'idea was / is get stock engine replace cam and get it in [290 ish hp?stock?].....
once in the list runs --not in defined order
headers w/elect cut off to still maintain the grocery getter sound
get more air in
throttle body upgrade
head work (if needed)
rear end change
new suspension (thinking of air bags)
computer programming (edit software or new chip)
delete factory fan (may be before swap)
upgrade ignition

The actuals I am still researching so any www. ya recommend I Will check em out.
this 'plan' is to set and project a budget ($1,500. initial then as I can add to it prob 75-200 month with another $1,000 at end of year) and is intended to keep driving car as the work goes on (not a daily driver it might see average of 100-200 miles a month and a possible 1200 mile trip 1 x a year) Had big hopes of going 'way out' 383 weekend only car with this one but i have to keep tame for a while still so says the $$.

Uncertainty I have:
Did I miss the answers on another form?
How can I find what HP these additions add?
Is if the stock lower can really handle 400 HP?
Could they handle a lil nitrous on top of it?
IS There A Better Way?

A 2nd way.... Lt1 instead of tbi? What is it really that much more work?
How much more cost for fuel system upgrade? (have a bud with running lt1 iron heads for around $ 575.00 NO ECM)
how many more hours would it take? (Average 20-30?? i have no clue)

ANY input is appreciated !!

Flip

You want to airbag a car that you want to run 13's? It's looks over performance and air bags aren't performance.

LT1 was multi-port (point) injection verses L05 TBI (central point) injection. The LT1 produced more torque (330 vs. 300 for '92 L05), horsepower (260 vs. 190), and had better fuel economy than L05 (16 city/26 highway vs. 14/20); however, it also costs over twice as much (reman L05 $1000.00 + $500.00 core charge=$1500; LT1 $4000.00+). Another thing to consider when compairing multi-point and TBI is how complex you like your intake systems. The TBI Model 220 is actually simpler than a 4 barrel carb while multi-port is a more complex system.

From what I understand, a definite handicap of L05 & L03 TBI engines was their restrictive air intake; however, I think in '92 they made some changes to solve that. Anyways, getting more air into your intake probably would help a bit but don't expect too much from each individual mod you make.

Before I add anything else, this is a wonderful website about TBI. Although it covers the L05's smaller sister, the L03 305, it has a lot of good material including TBI verses carb verses TPI (and as a result, SPI), both forms of multi-point injection. The website is: http://www.goingfaster.com/spo/spo_technology_central.html
Be sure to check out these links at the top, entitled "What is TBI Throttle Body Injection?" and "The Realy Story of the L03." It also has an exploded view of the GM TBI unit (Model 220). This website is also a rebutal to all those people who still worship the carb (you infidels).

As far as a throttle body upgrade, check out www.turbocity.com and you can either get individual parts for a TBI or the whole system. These parts have been improved to open up the body to allow better and more flow. Here is the basic package:

And the deluxe package:

Hope this helps you on your quest for Caprice performance.
