TYIA for any help! 1996 ford taurus the car starts, runs, idles fine. When you go to shift the car into reverse or OD od D the car bucks quick and rumbles and then quickly dies. When you put the car into 1 (low) gear the car seems to idle and run ok. Of course if you give it gas when you put the car into reverse/OD/D you can keep the car reunnin rough but still running. When you can get it driving every stop sign or red light the car obviously dies after the RPMS drop raise and the surge and the rough idle then DIES. I took the car to autozone, they read the codes as some wiring malfunction and a speed control something code. And of course they could not help out whatsoever as they have never seen any of these codes before. Any help would greatly be appreciated, thanks.

Change the spark plugs, air filter and fuel filter. make sure all vacume lines are on. The 91 my GF had allowed you to adjust the idle up at the throttle body but my book stops at 95 so I'm not sure about yours. Take off the negative battery cable (to rest the codes) and take it back to autozone and get it tested again. This time ask them what needs to be replaced, if the person testing doesn't know get him/her to consult with the other guys/gals behind the counter. Write down the exact codes they give you and repost them here. I will not be able to help with the codes but if you have the exact ones then someone else here may. Lots of luck. BTW you might want to invest in an Hays automotive manuel while your at autozone, 15 dollars will take you a long way.

Disconnecting the battery will not erase the codes on an OBDII system. Have codes read again and post back. I have access to all Ford repairs from 96 to present.

OK, thanks for the help so far. I cleared w/e codes that could be cleared by taking power away from the computer there, and now no check engine light on which is a step in the right direction. NOW i went to autozone again and now only one code P1742 transmission control malfunction or somethin to that effect but P1742 is the only code down and different than yesterdays 2 codes. Thanks again for your help on this. FORGOT to add the tranny has 125k on it, just wondering if this might be a typical problem at some mileage wit these trannies? Thanks!

I Just looked it up online and it says "P1742 Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid Faulty" and jus called up my dealer and says there is no part called that but there is a shift solenoid does that sound like the right part to explain what is goin on here?

The only vehicle that has this code is the Taurus made for sell in California. The code is for the Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid. If the dealer runs the VIN, they can tell where it came from. Need to know which transmission is in your vehicle. There is an AX4N and an AX4S. Each of these have different codes in trans. The AX4S has the code you refer to. The AX4N does not show this code.

Well I bought the TCC solenoid and installed it and it cleared the code in the computer at least! BUT unfortunately the same problems still exist. Any new and bright ideas, oh yea there are NOW NO codes at all no check engine light nothing to help here. Thanks.
