Should I buy this '95 Jetta?

Hi all, have found a very clean '95 Jetta sedan for a very good price....the problem is that the autotragic transmission is bad. I've heard nothing but horror stories about this vintage unit. I've never had such a late model VW, up till now they've all been Bugs and first generation Rabbits so these new fangled 4 speed A/T are a new world to me.

Any suggestions? Am not about to get involved with a car that has constant big money trans problems (like Saabs!) Thanks in advance

Autozone is now a dealer for Alldata & may try to oversimplify. That TSB was a common problem & may fix the transaxle, but there is also the problem that those transmissions usually were horribly neglected & died from other reaons also.

Thanks for the feedback. I didn't know about the association between Autozone and Alldata, your explanation of their oversimplification makes sense. Have been noticing a LOT of these vintage cars for sale (cheap) with bad automatics. Unreal. The other concern is that this must be impacting resale values big time.

Well, my 96 Jetta was an automatic for the first 116k miles of it's life and it died even with TLC. It was converted to a standard 5spd and it was said to be worth $6k. I bought it and it is a very good car!
