Slow start 2000 Elantra

My 2000 Elantra is barely starting. The engine cranks fine because the battery is new but it has to turn over for a while before it will start up, then it barely gets going and I have to pump it with gas. I have a new battery and Have recently replaced the spark plugs and wires. I also had the exhaust manifold replaced last month due to a recall. What other reasons could cause this?? My gas mileage has also dropped to about 20 mpg where it used to be about 28. Anyone who can help I appreciate it.

Thanks

I have a 2000 Hyundai Elantra too. It has a manual transmission. It has trouble starting as you have explained, but sometimes it doesn't start at all. When it finally does start, it stinks of heavy exhaust, even if I haven't been giving it a little gas. I've had the battery replaced at the suggestion of the dealership, but that didn't fix the problem. Now it's at the dealership, but it starts for them every time they try it. I'll have to pay $90 for them to tell me there's nothing wrong with it. Have you had any success fixing this problem? I'm at my whits end - everyday for the past four months I wonder, "Will my car start today?"

Have them check the ignition coil. I have 2 2000 elantras, and both of them always started slow, or started but ran bad until the car warmed up. It usually happens after a rain. I was always getting a check engine light after this. I took it in to the dealer and all they told me is it needed a tune-up. So I had them tune it up, $250.00 later. 2 weeks after that it rained and the same problem. So I started to look into it myself and found out the ignition coil must of had a crack in it. It works just like a distributor cap. So I bought a new one at NAPA for 80 bucks. Problem is solved. Now I have to go get another one for the other car. I'm not sure if that's your problem, but it could be.

I would also check fuel filter/fuel pump.
