Stuck In Park

After starting my 2000 Grand Prix the shifter sometimes will be stuck in park. When this happens, the light that appears on the dash under the gear display is not lit. Sometimes it will be this way for a matter of seconds, then there is a "click" noise and the light pops on under the "P" on the dash. Other times I have to turn the car on and off a number of times before the light finally appears under the "P". As soon as the gear indicator light comes on under the "P" it can be shifted with no problem. This problem happens sporadically. It starts and shifts ok most of the time, and there seems to be no rhyme or reason to when this happens. Also, when it is stuck in park the key will not go back to the off position and cannot be removed from the ignition.......once again, the key rotates to off and comes out fine after the gear indicator light on the dash lights up.
Anyone have ideas on what might be causing this?

I know this will sound unrelated but check your battery cables for corrosion and tightness.

Larry,
The best one I heard this week was a guy with the same trouble. A guy from one of the GM sites told him to "push the brake down as hard as he could. Then pull on the shifter as hard as he could".
The best part is, the guy wrote back an hour later and told him, "Thanks, it worked".
