Spare Tire Assembley

I just bought a 97 tahoe. The spare tire assembley is wrecked (cable is gone) so I have to carry my spare in the back. Is it easy to replace this assembley? Are they readily available at scrap yards?

I believe there are just 4 bolts that hold it in place. Take a look at it to make sure, but it should probably take less than an hour to do it.

The spare tire assembly on my trucks rusted out, I need to get a new one or make one this spring.

When I first bought my 88 Silverado new, within a month someone took bolt cutters to the spare tire carrier cable and made off with the assembly and a brand new Goodyear AT 235. The moral is without a good alarm system don't keep a new tire under the truck.

that sucks... who would do something like that? I had one stolen out of the bed of my truck. It was the factory spare (17 years old at the time), so I hope they put it on their vehicle, had a blowout, and hit a telephone pole.

I keep my spare tire in the bed of my truck, but the wheels so rusted i dont think anyone would want it.

Mine was rusted pretty bad too, I've got the 8 lug pattern on mine, which is harder to find than the 6 lug, at least around here.

I use my '94 C1500 quite a bit around my yard, (with 6+ acres it comes in handy!) Well, last year I was spreading mulch around the trees on my property when I was driving across my front lawn when I heard this loud noise and the truck shook a little bit. In my rear view mirror I saw my spare tire and the assembly that holds it in place lying on the grass. It had rusted completely off. I was told that these are easy to replace- just get a used one from a salvage yard preferably from the south as they are rust free. I'm hoping to locate one this Spring. I'm thankful this didn't happen on a crowded highway at 65 m.p.h.+!

Yeah, That tire and the assembly gos off at 70 MPH bounces onto a windshield your going to have a mess. I havent really got under there to see how the tire assembly works but ill see if i can weld something together. Yeah J-Ri, Id hope no one around here would be that low to steal a spare tire. Right now its coverd in about 3 feet of snow so you dont know whats in there anyway.

LOL those words made me laugh and brought back some memories. My first vehicle was a 1972 Ford F100 ( yeah I know better NOW). It was my first winter and first big storm. I ended up putting the truck in the ditch and had to get winched out. There appeared to be no damage to the truck and I went on my way. Well the next day I was going down the road, ( a rural out of the way road) at about 60 m..p.h. The hood started shaking and then without warning it proceeded to fly up and over my truck! I quickly looked in my rear view mirror, and saw a tiny Chevy Chevette following me. I started to panic as thoughts went through my mind of the impending doom. Well, the hood crashed to the road and the Chevette was able to stop mere inches from it. The girl got out of the Chevette and thankfully was all right, ( a little shaken), but we both ended up going on our way. It seems the previous owner of the truck replaced the hood hinges with "garden variety" hardware store door hinges that were way to small. I threw the hood in the bed of the truck and went home and replaced the hinges with heavier duty ones that probably outlasted the truck. I could only imagine the damage that could have occured with a truck hood which probably weighed more than the Chevette it almost hit. :o
