93 1.9 auto.Runs perfect.VERY well maintained,treated.262,000
Today after having driven on the hwy for 2 hrs.50mph..felt like a SUDDEN! downshift into second.for NO reason? Wtf? THEN I realized the engine had quit..NO dash lights ANYTHING came on? Coasted to a stop.Put it in park.Turned the ignition off.EVEN though it was ON but NO dash lights, indicators NOTHING was on.Turned the key BACK to on.All appeared normal.Started right up.Back to normal. ANY? ideas as to what this might have been? What to even begin checking? I had just spent the last 1 1/2 hrs driving in BAD! road contions.High winds, snow, blowing snow, cold, slushy, salty roads.I can't see any of that causing such a quck fast glitch though??? I do a lot of bad road winter driving..12-16 hrs a week.So before the winter..pretty much all the underhood conections ,battery, are checked pretty thorougly.

Ignition keyswitch is my guess. Mine went out totally, had to jump the relays under the hood till I got a new one.

Good guess... pretty clearly something with a hot circuit. Ignition or starter wiring... something of the sort. A check of all your starter/ignition wiring and cleaning of corroded connections, tightening etc may do the trick.

Bummer is, since the car is running fine you won't know if you fixed anything... just cross your fingers and hope it doesn't happen again.

In reading the post my first thought was a slip of the timing belt, but I believe the power would have stayed on in that case.

Similar things happened to me with my '93 1.9 a few times before it didn’t come back after a moment. Then I had to replace the ignition switch.

Other curious things include that the radiator fan circuit failed, so the fan never came on. I jumpered it, but after I changed the ignition switch I took the jumpers off and it worked, for a month or two, then it failed again.

Nowadays, the radio loses it’s memory when I shut the motor off unless the “key in ignition” switch fails ( beep-beep when I open the door ).

I suspect a short somewhere is burning out the contacts in the ignition switch.

Thanks! for your help guys! Losin' the hot/ignition switch..ya..I can see that.BUT! WHAT was with that grand prix style downshift from o/d at 50 mph..into SECOND that it did..?? HAHA. I wouldn't think that the engine quitting/losing all it's power would do that.Mnd you..this car has only stalled ONCE before!..Nothing happenned then.

Re "that grand prix style downshift from o/d at 50 mph..into SECOND that it did..??", I really am not well acquainted with that tranny, mine's a five speed manual. But with the computer going off with everything else, you maybe should be glad it didn't go into park!

My message is about only one of numerous possibilities, and I can't think of any way to determine the cause immediately. But you might want to put some 1/4" quick connects on a couple six inch long pieces of 14 gauge wire just in case. Check it out in the book, but as I recall the ignition relay is in the same box as the underhood relays. When you jump the run contacts, it's like you had switched the motor to run, of course. When you jumper the other two, the start contacts, the starter turns the motor over, and it starts if all else is as should be.

There are a few messages in the back pages of this forum which deal with the problem, and others on the usenet newsgroups.

Have you checked out the error codes from the computer? I've never checked mine, Haynes book diagram of the contact to jumper is ambiguous.

Thanks a lot for that Dale!..Ya..VERY good point..and help.Pretty simple to have a couple pieces wire, some disconnects..like a little pair of test leads/jumper leads..in the car along with my toolbox and spares.
Yes.I have checked the codes with my trusty little code reader.Cheap at Wally,Ebay. I'ldno..that "jumper" idea with the codes(for retreiving them) when the reader is actually about $20 Cdn. at Wally and SIMPLE to use! Not recentlly though.MAYBE I should NOW..LOL. The ONLY code I ever pulled was a maf code..about 1 1/2 years ago..AND lol..this HAS happenned 1 X without me seeing the cel ever come on.And 1 X WITH the cel coming in BRIEFLLY.
