Emergency brake shoes

My brother in law ownes a 1991 celica GTS. He was having some grinding noise comming from his back end so I tried to help in diagnose the problem. I first started with the brakes. The car has rear discs. The pads looked good, so I pulled off the rotor and found the problem. His emergency brake shoes are shot. There is no pad left, just metal to grind on metal. The problem is that I can't find anywhere that sells them. Is this a special order item. If not, what do I need to ask for. Thanks for the advise.

Firstly, what are emergancy brake shoes? Do you mean the hand brake? Cause the hand brake is just a mechanical connection between the driver and the rear brakes and should just operate the rear brakes via the cable instead of by hydraulic pressure. Just buy replacement rear brake pads, that should be the problem solved.

That isn't going to solve my problem. I do mean the hand brake, some people do call it the emergency brake or the park brake. With the car being rear disc, it also has what looks like a mini drum with mini brake shoes that are only work when you pull on the handle. The brake pads for the disc are brand new. I need the brake shoes. But I have talked to a few differnt part stores and they don't carry them. I am very unfamiliar with this, but I know that buying new brake pads won't solve my problem. It is like the rear brakes are a drum/rotor combination.

talk to a dealership, they'll give you an extremely high price for everything, but then you can find out what exactly it's called and possibly information on where else they carry those special brake shoes.

that is exactly what it is... it is a small drum built in to a disc rotor. and yes you will most likely have to special order them, but the parts store should be able to do that for you... if not, as much as i hate to say it, you're gonna have to go to the dealer and pay about $65 for the shoes... same thing happened with my 91 GTS, but Auto Zone was able to order them for me, only $35 that way. but through the dealer, they'll charge you twice as much.
