Bang for buck the AMDs rock. Intels are way overpriced for the comperable power. However, the T-Bird series run quite hot and while a Intel will shutdown given a certain temp, the AMD will fry itself quite spectacularly.
Having owned both, I prefer the AMD though - it's cheaper to upgrade later on. I just dropped a Volcano HSF on my T-Bird 1.4 and it stays fairly cool (52-54 degrees).

I'm in the same boat...am looking for a new PC...and after years of resisting...this time i'm definatley gonna go for AMD......:)...prices I've seen, the PC's with AMD inside are about £300 cheaper then Intel ones with better specs.....

Thanks for this.I think I will lean toward AMD for the cost factor and the fact that it is just a little bit better than Intel for the momentBenchmarks are about the same if not better.I will let you know what I actually get.:flash:

AMD is coming out with a new chip soon, I think it's called hammer-head. It's supposed to be .13 micron. :)

Actually the first chip with .13 micron will be the Troughroubred wich should come any time soon. It will be folowed by another troughroubred with 0.13 and SOI.
The claw-hammer will comme in late fall and it will be a 32-64 bit hybrid CPU. The first ones will be 0.13 and use Soi in their design. and after that will drop to 0.9 micron.

Im gonne have to go with setana, I've had both and AMD is much better then intel is overall price and upgrading. I've gotten better 3D performance out of the AMD although its not known for outdoing intel.

I'm going with the AMD Athlon XP 1800 (1.53ghz), on a Shuttle AK31 Mobo. This combination (or very close), easily beat a 2ghz P4, and it is much cheaper:)
Also, a 128mb video card should help toast those P4's with 64mb Nvidias:devil:

yes, amd owns intel. There chips run hotter, but can handle it, so dont be scared. get a nice heatsink and fan like setanta did. I personally run the thermaltake mini-orb, but I only have a t-bird 900. I was thinking of building a multi-media box for video editing and to use as a web server, and I'm definitely going amd.
