I know ya'll are probably annoyed with people doing research on ya'll so I apologize. But I was hoping you can all help a pretty girl with her thesis paper for psycholgy. I've been reading some of the posts the past few weeks and this seems to be much more interesting than what I thought and is actually more entertaining. My paper is about addictions, adrenaline included. So I just wanted to know for now, besides racing are there any other activites ya'll take place in just for the adrenaline, including past ones? How is racing different than other things? Has anybody ever called you an andrenaline addict before? Would you classify yourself as one or is it just fun and games? What do you tell yourself about the risks involved? Do you ever want to stop, especially if somebody you knew died? I am not stereotyping anybody here, but I have read some posts were people claimed its all for the adrenaline. I would really appreciate ya'lls help. Thank ya'll.

Before I was old enough to drive, I got my adrenaline rush from skateboarding. But that gets kind of old when you sprain your ankle and can't walk for a week because you bailed a 10 set. So now it's street racing for my kicks. I'd never stop street racing/drag racing/modding fast cars. It's what I do. I'm addicted. I couldn't stop even if I thought I wanted to.

I would def consider myself an adrenaline addictict when it comes to street racing. there is nothing else like the rush you feel and you go wide open throttle on a empty city street. I have been racing ever sence i was around 6 with go carts so i got addicted early.

As far as the risks go i understand them and except them. I never race when there are other cars on the street, i stick mostly to freeway runs. I never race with my friends in the car.

I know i will stop when i get older, i will most likely grow out of it and/or be forced to cause of out of state college comen up this fall. But i know it will be with me for ever. I am sure that when i am older i will still like to but wont be as serios as i am now. Looking at every car i see on the road mentally sizing it up to guess how i would do if i raced it. Its an addiction i really can't help but do that. Only thing i can really control is when i race. If someone i knew died from it i would def think twice about it.

before i got into cars me and my crew use to just hang out and get drunk and go china or flushing most of the times and we normally would roll 30 deep, my boys would always get into hugh brawls and most of my friends have been arrested before for either assault or drugs. so i got my adrenaline from doing bad things with society. however i was lucky to never get caught cause i was never in the wrong place at the wrong time. usually the times i'm out of state is when big things goes down so i'm very lucky to be gone for those certain days.

now that we've all grown up we feel that we are very good citizens of hte city and no longer get into trouble with the law. the group mostly split up into sub groups and we all do our own thing. i'm split up with the car enthusist of our group and thats how we got into cars or street racing.

we usually just do it for fun and game, or just to shut someone up. however most of hte races are among friends and are hardly ever organized. we usually race strangers on the highway cause thats were we usually see them. all of my friends are excellent drivers with good common sense so we know when to stop. however sometimes they go into this mind set that they don't care as long as they win. and when its over they do that "oh shit i'm a idiot" feeling. but they've stopped doing that casue we realise that our cars are starting to be too fast for the streets so we're gonna start organizing certain weekends were we all drive down to the race track.

what else are we addicted too? hmmmm ciggerettes, alcohol, and other stuff that i can't say on the forums.

ma'am, adrenaline is not the catalyst that began our passion for racing, its just one of the perks. No one starts something for the adrenaline, its just once you get it going you come back and do it again. its an unexpected reaction that causes repetition. A re-enforcer if you will.

yes we often......I guess I should say I. I often race for the adrenaline but its much more than that. your familiar with Freud's theory of the Id right? well thats all it is. its us wanting to do something just cause we wanna cause its fun and it fullfills an impulsive want. If you wanna get more poetic its also because it gives us a sense of fulfillment or acomplishment.
I've spent many hours tunning and buying stuff for my cars. when I see someone else on the street who is willing to race I have an opportunity to see if my efforts have payed off. If I win I am fulfilled and happy. if loose now have a new goal, a purpose. I need to improve if I want to win next time.
Its also penis envy I guess. you pull up to a light. A guy is sitting in his new Mazda 3 with some hip hop blasting. what goes through your head? "this little punk thinks he is hot shit? just cause you got a new car you think your tough? I'm gonna stomp you and make you feel like crap so I can feel better" .......penis envy!

from a Sociological stand.
Consider that it brings respect amongst your peers. and remeber that respect elevates ones self esteem which in turn brings you closer from your actual self to you Ideal self. Reaching the Ideal self and obtaining praise is the basics of Social Psychology.

hope this helps out some. so what kind of psychology are ya getting into?

altima05luver, welcome to the forums. It's always appreciated to have a young lady such as yourself in these forums. Mostly it's just one big giant sausage fest in here.

For myself personally, adrenaline comes to me after a well fought race. For me, I don't realize what's going on until it's all over. It's like my vision of winning a race took over my entire body, and accelerating was the only thing on my mind. I then look at the speedometer and notice that I'm nearing 120 mph. That's when the rush hits me and I also notice I'm about several miles down the road from my starting point. Totally forgetting what I saw during those few moments of speeding. All I remember is my shift points, and where my opponent stands. It's more like tunnel vision, and all there is is a finish line ahead. This is all from my POV. Granted there is the reality of watching out for civilians and what not, but when it's open road, you vs. your opponent, you're as free as you could possibly be.

Plus I live my life 1/4 mile at a time, and for those 15 secs or more, I realized my car is slow. L8...

I'm not going to answer the original question, simply because I think there are plenty of factors, and quite truely, I dislike explaining street racing...I think I've just gotten sick of everybody trying to explain it or stereotype it or classify it...I mean why do people drink? Some because it's social, some because they like the taste, some because it's cultural, some because they are sad and want a break from reality, some because they're bored, some because mad, sad, happy, alone, in a group...there are a billion reasons and everyone does it for a different reason and everyone's experiences are different...yada yada yada.

But on to the point I wanted to make...am I the only one who dislikes the adrenaline aspect of racing? I mean don't get me wrong, I don't dislike adrenaline per say, but with me, if I'm going 100+mph, I want to be calm, collected, and 100% in control of all bodily movement.
Adrenaline usually comes in moments of high-intensity, usually derived from 'fight or flight' reactions our body and mind experience. Adrenaline comes on in times of danger, surprise, fear, excitement. When adrenaline comes on full blown, you will notice that sometimes your body has slight movements, twitching, reactions, etc that you are not fully in control of. Essentially, your body is instinctively reacting without cognitive mental consent. I DON'T LIKE THIS! I want to be in complete control. I know my first time to the race track I was antsy, I screwed up on the launch, bogged the car, etc.

I've been in a few car accidents, and I get nervous sometimes, and scared sometimes (which is good, because the second you don't fear your car, is the second you kill yourself in it). But what I'm saying is basically, that I really dislike the 'rush' of adrenaline during a race, because I want to be collected and in control.
Adrenaline can cause rash decisions, involuntary movement, etc, and that is the opposite of what I want when I'm going triple digits.
Just my .02, I have nothing against adrenaline, I love it at other points in my life, but not at the ones that are occuring at 140mph.

dampachi
03-01-2005, 09:19 PM
I agree with you. Back when I first started racing my mustang I'd get really nervous and my left foot would start twitching and it'd cause me to always let the clutch out too fast. But now, I'm hardly ever really nervous and I never fuck up my launches. :)

in regards to the original question.

Im a speed freak. I grew up on dirt bikes, dune buggies, and snowmobiles. Mostly snowmobiles though. I used to race them across frozen lakes and loved doing crazy speeds on them. If you think doing 100+ MPH in a car is an adrenaline rush, try doing it on a snowmobiles wearing only a helmet and on a trail thats maybe 6 feet wide. If that doesnt get your heart beating nothing will. But i dont have the time to go snowmobiling anymore, so my need for speed has turned my attention towards cars. My car isnt really fast yet, but its getting their.

LOL! I had power wheels when i was a kid, only it wasnt power wheels. It was like Yamaha and it was a 3 wheeler. Then when i got a little older i got a 50CC dirt bike. Man that thing was fun. Now i have a 220CC dirt bike. When i was little i also used to have a 50CC snowmobile. It went like 10MPH tops, but when your 4 you dont care. Now i have a Polaris Indy 500. MMM power. My first car had a whole 115HP, my car now has almost 200HP and i ordered my smaller pulley, so i should be over 200HP once it gets installed.

... something about matt telling me there are some 34C's on this thread.. he lies again!!! NOOOOOOOO

as for the topic, those of us who are racing purists don't do it as an adrenaline thing... it's for the essence of motor racing in general. when i think of "racing" i think of the last formula one grand prix i went to in Phoenix. The smell of burning hundred octane, the sound of tens of thousands of RPMs from such highly tuned engines... the roar as a pack of cars came under the bridge... it still gives me goosebumps...

it's the adrenaline junkies who use cars to get their high, and the purists who because of their love for the automotive world don't need the adrenaline for the high.

oh.. and my sources of adrenaline: biking, swimming, rock climbing, running... and other such physical activities.
