Every time i switch on the A/C i hear the compressor click and then i can hear it whining as the engine revs. Switch it off and the whining stops. I took it to the shop and they told me the compressor needs replacing.
Ok but why is it whining, could it be fixed or improved at least some other way - adding oil maybe? They also told me that it was good for refrigerant but they only topped that up a couple of months ago.

Laurie,
Same Jeep same problem. My a/c was low on referigerant when I bought it so I filled it. Worked for one summer and then warm air. Even when it worked it whined when I gave it gas. I also noticed a significant power loss with a/c on. I think there should be a little but mine was bad I thought.
Isn't that noise annoying?
curious to see how it turns out

:) Yeah it's very annoying. I get about 20 mins of cold air then it goes warm. I'm wondering if they used the wrong refrigerant, since i read here there are 2 incompatible types.
It sounds like it might be low on compressor oil but from what i've read i can't work out if the oil is separate from the refrigerant or it is the same fluid. and the Haynes manual i have seems to missing useful information in this area.
