explosions

I've read that some Crown Vics explode when they get rear ended. Has anybody heard this and if so do you have any info about it?

yea ive heard of it but look at it this way wold cop be driveing a bomb? i mean ud think its a hokes if the cops still drive them as patrol cars

please any one correct me if im wrong here but this is what ive heard about the exploding cop cars. from what i understand they said that ford crown vics (03 and younger ?) when hit in the rear will push the gas tank into the rear end and the gas tank will explode. after this problem was discovered i think they put shields or something for police crown vics and basically made it available to any one else who wants it. from what ive heard and please correct me if im wrong but the crown vic has to get hit at around 70mph to rupture the fuel tank and cause an explosion. somehow i think they fixed the problem in either 03 or 04+ crown vics.

Actually, this would happen to MOST EVERY vehicle on the highway, if rearended from 70+ MPH while stopped. Think about it, what is the most common vehicle to be stopped on the side of a highway? A police/highway patrol car. Therefore they are the MOST LIKELY to be rear ended.

It is true that IF the fuel tank were not rear of the axle as it is, the risk would be lessened, but you can never eliminate all risk. Moving the fuel tank would seriously impact other things the departments want desperately, large trunks, large rear seating, and rear wheel drive.

Another thing to note, if you look at retired police cars and similar, you will find in MOST CASES the department drilled holes in the front edge of the trunk to mount "safety equipment" or radio stuff, OFTEN (yes OFTEN) the drill INTO THE FUEL TANK, then run a screw into it. It is so common, that Ford has issued numerous advisories about where NOT to drill/screw into the trunk. Sadly, MANY upfitters ignore these warnings, and screws puncturing the fuel tanks is a really big problem.

yes your right it was when the cars are stationary. what were those things they started equipping them with i remember hearing about some kind of shield or something between the tank and the rear axle in the news.

Could this be responsible for fuel pump failure??? I've got a '98 P71, and it's on its third fuel pump. (I've only burnt up one) My Dad tried to tell me that it's because I let the tank go under a 1/4 tank

You would think that with a hole in the fuel tank, the lack of pressure would screw over the fuel pump, wouldn't it???
